Hi! My KDE system is really running slow. Slow as in molasses. Slow like 30+ seconds to bring up anything, especially a shell or mozilla. 2-3 minutes to log in, most of the time loading the desktop and panel. I decided to try the combreloc tweak talked about here and here. My questions are:

What does this tweak do? And how do I enable it?

One post says just ''export LDFLAGS="-z combreloc’. Is that right? What does LDFLAGS do? Also, the quotes don't match up, is it single or double?

I am really new to linux, so please be gentle ;-)

Have you tried this thread (fixing up /etc/hostname, /etc/hosts):

The extreme slowness you report is unlikely to be related to a compile time issue, like enabling combreloc. The speed changes achieved by those tweaks and also CFLAGS settings in your make.conf file etc, are not going to bring you from 30 sec to 1 sec for a console startup, but rather from 1.1 sec to .9 sec for instance.

I don't know what kind of cpu and ram u have, but I asume they are at least appx 600 mhz and 128 mb. In that case a terminal should pop up in around 1 sec. Your problem lies elsewhere for sure and a good starting point is the tip in the previous post where you are advised to set hostname file and hosts file, both in /etc directory. Let us know if you know more specifics.

thanks for the tips guys! I'm at work now, so I will have to wait until I get home. I did a complete reformat last night, I will see if that changes anything.

thanks again, and I will keep you updated.
