I need to press cntrl + alt and the plus key everytime I startx. If I don't, I get a really small window in the center. Is there a way to automate it?

I believe the problem you're having is that your resolution is not set properly.

You can manualy hack the /etc/X11/XF86Config or run x86config again.

Edit XF86Config:
Find the screen section and get rid of the resolutions you don't want.

run x86config:
When you get to the menu that asks you about resolutions. Remove all the resolutions you do not want to run and choose only the ones that you do.

For example, I got rid of all resolutions except 1024x768 since that is the highest that monitor can handle.

You don't have to remove all resolutions except the one you want to use. This is a bad idea if you want to play games like Quake 3 in XFree, for example.

Just change the order ...
I changed mine to "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

"800x600" "640x480"
What you put first in this line will be default resolution, in this example 800x600
