It means that the release wasn't ready by the time you read that article. It also means that it will be released when it is ready.
Aside from the gcc 2.x --> gcc 3.x migration, explain to me one feature only available in an installed version of 1.4 that isn't available in 1.2+'emerge -u world'.

I'll "try" to explain it to you.
I DO know at least one feature that isn't available "in an installed version of 1.4 that isn't available in 1.2+'emerge -u world' ".
It is the speedtouch USB modem support during the install.
It's quite funny to notice that every time someone make any reference to this issue, he is either not "understood" or simply ignored.
So, I'll be glad that you stop giving us this "it is ready when it is ready" bulls****. I'm ok with the dev team taking their time, I'll be much more happy that they would give us some info, but nevertheless it's cool. After all, they are not even paid.
Anyway, what really piss me off right now is people like you talking without any knowledge of the situation. Why do you speak if it's to say stuff like this ?
PS : really sorry about the flames, but I was holding myself for too long. |

There are a number of posts in the archive about getting 1.2 to work with the alcatel speedtouch modem during install. here's one, there are others.

OK, no problem. I'll stop -- as soon as everyone stops bitching and whining about when 1.4 will be released.

That's very amusing.

Will 1.4 have Glibc 2.3? When can we expect it (meaning Glibc)? |

On a related point, although this has been mentioned already by several other people in several different places, anybody that has a networking-capable OS already installed or can get networking going from a 1.2 install CD can download a 1.4rc1 stage tarball and use that in place of the ones on the 1.2 CD, and instant 1.4 - no GCC upgrade hassles, no wasted time compiling things with 2.95 that will get blown away later. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

The only qeustion about the release of 1.4 is: Can someone promise me that this thread will be locked when it's released?? It's an eyesore to an otherwise beautiful community. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

What's holding Gentoo 1.4 back seems to be the lack of a commercially GCC3 compiled java. Other than that it seems that we only have small bumps on the way to a release.
I wouldn't count of >=Glibc 2.3 making it into 1.4, glibc2.2.5-r7 seems stable and it's well tested. glibc 2.3 has shown a tendency to fsck up systems, at least that's all I've heard so far, be that from LFS-dev or Gentoo-dev... Glibc 2.3 just doesn't seem ready yet, it's seems better left for post 1.4 integration. |

hi !
According to Daniel Robbins, I saw that released of Gentoo 1.4 was imminent. It's a good thing !
Otherwise, I didn't think my topic would make so many answers and that it would be in sticky :)
I was impatient to this next released.
Good day,
gK from France. |

Hrmm something is strange on bugs.gentoo.org
I tried to download those ebuilds to test glibc 2.3 but all I'm able to get are attachment.cgi - I tried opening them in vim to see if the ebuild where just renamed, but no..
I've previously never had problems like this, anyone willing to email me the ebuilds so they can be tested? |

If u want to test glibc 2.3.1 under gentoo, u can give a look on the ebuild on bugs.gentoo.org :
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8766
There is two attachments :
- rename the first in "glibc_2.3-ebuild.tar.bz2"
- and the second in "gcc-r2-ebuild.tar.bz2"
For having glibc 2.3.1, u have to rename the ebuild to take the good version, i.e. 2.3 >> 2.3.1.
Have a nice day. |

Same here. I've wanted to lock this thread personally for a very long time. Soon I will have the chance, very soon. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Probably just means that he's itching to lock it. The Doctors in their white coats tell me not locking it shows that I'm making progress. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

It'll probably get locked and unlocked about fifty times as all of us claw over top of each other trying to lock it. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

Having seen complaints of a few packages that won't build under gcc 3.2 I speculate that we're waiting for 3.2.1. My reading of gcc mailing lists suggests that'll be ready in a week. Add a week for the gentoo devs. to rebuild & check everything, and I predict: Friday, 15th. Of course, this is just my guess. |

Waiting for 3.2.1 (or 3.2.2 if the GCC team decides to leave some if the optimization bugs for a later release) would be an exellent idea - as 3.2 is known to miscompiled some code at march=i686 and above, also lots of little fixes has gone in to the branch release. |

I know this topic has been beat into the ground, but I've checked all the sources I could (CVS page hasn't been updated in 8 weeks) and was just wondering what the status on this was. If someone could just point me in the right direction, it would be most appreciated. Thanks!

The status is about where it was the last time someone asked. We don't know when, but they are working on getting it ready. As soon as it's ready they will release it. Several moments later there will be a mad dash to this thread by every moderator in a desperate attempt to be the one that closes it. Why? Because no one seems to accept the fact that it will be out when it's ready and not a moment before. This is similar to someone who recently asked if we could have a status bar for completion of compiling a program added to portage. You just can't really do this because it's hard to tell how long it will take a computer to compile something. We can't tell you when because it's hard to tell how long it will take to finish it. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Q: How many gentoo mods does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Eight...one to screw it in and the rest to impatiently answer everyone that asks "Why is it so dark in here?"
