I'm just getting my sparc machine up to daylight in the last couple of days.
I've build fluxbox, but I'm finding a couple of the tools such as fluxbg can't
be built, even with ~sparc set in make.conf

Code:

!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "fluxbg" have been masked.

I've also found ncpfs can't be built for same reason.

Has anyone else run into quite a number of packages that can't
be built for sparc? What do you do - look for source tarballs?

I want a lightweight but not featureless window manager. Fluxbox
looked like it would do and is more currently maintained than blackbox.
Are there any other favorites that work well on an old Sparc Ultra?

I'm running fluxbox on both my sparcs, it runs nicely. From the ebuild it looks like no-one's tried fluxbg on sparc, as its only keyword is ~x86. You have a few options here:

* Copy the ebuild to your overlay directory and add the ~sparc keyword
* Use 'emerge /usr/portage/x11-misc/fluxbg/fluxbg-0.7.ebuild'
* Temporarily add ~x86 to your ACCEPT_KEYWORDS

If it works, it's worth submitting a bug or pestering someone on irc to get it keyworded ~sparc.

I'm not sure how the detail "add the ~sparc keyword"" is done.

Is there an alternative - like an bsetroot that can handle jpg's or some
way to effect the empty menu I see for selecting a background image?
I didn't see anything about this in the man page for fluxbox.

OK, I've found reference to bsetbg in the fluxbox website.
This may work. It comes with the core fluxbox WM.

I have some useful results now...

Emerge will work if you supply the full path to the ebuild file.
I was able to build ncpfs this way on Sun Sparc. You don't
need to do anything with the flags in make.conf to get
ncpfs to build when these bogus errors about the masked
builds appear.

emerge /usr/portage/net-fs/ncpfs/ncpfs-2.2.3.ebuild

The background is set in fluxbox and able to work
with transparent aterms when I use the bsetbg command
in a style. I simply copy some Style that was close to
what I wanted into a new file, and then replaced the bsetroot
I found in there with a bsetbg call to load my bitmap.

This works in fluxbox...

Code:

cd /usr/share/commonbox/styles
cp LemonSpace Lemon-mine
vi Lemon-mine

change the line:

Code:

rootCommand: bsetroot -solid rgb:db/bc/83

into:

Code:

rootCommand:    bsetbg -tile /home/myusername/mypic.jpg

I have DRI enabled on the Creator 3D. The glx* programs won't run, but I've
got the transparency I wanted in aterm, and that is the target, so I'm happy.

Yeah, for the most part, if an ebuild doesn't have -sparc in it's KEYWORDS= line, chances are we haven't gotten around to testing it yet.

The best way to get us to do this is either to file a bug at http://bugs.gentoo.org and assign it to the sparc team, or come into the #gentoo-sparc IRC channel on the Freenode IRC network (irc.freenode.net).
