I have read a number of things about this to try to get it working and I have tried applying the patch from sourceforge.
My attempt at applying this patch was wholly unsuccessful and rather pathetic since I realized that I didn't really know what I was doing. It brought up some weird stuff and ultimately asked me what file I wanted to patch to which I said /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage because that is where the kernel image is and then I copied it to /boot like you would if you had just recompiled the kernel.
I have also enabled all the ACPI stuff in the kernel except for the Toshiba extras, cpu enumeration, and debug statements.
I am using the gentoo-sources kernel. Any tips on this would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks
Me
PS. If you need any more info on this from me and computer then let me know. |

smellycheeseboy,
Yes we need more info, what kernel did you emerge?
What patch did you get from sourceforge?
Did you read this web page?

I emerged gentoo-sources. The kernel number in /proc/version is 2.4.20-gentoo-r8.

The answer to these questions is yes I did read this webpage and I used the acpi-20030916-2.4.22.diff patch but I think that it is for a different kernel.
Thanks.

smellycheeseboy,
the patch you tried to install is acpi-DATE-2.4.22.diff. It is for 2.4.22, your kernel is 2.4.20
If you check here http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/sys-kernel/index.xml you will see which kernel-source is at which rev (when I looked, you wanted vanilla-sources)

Do you know if I can find a patch for the 2.4.20 kernel? Also I was thinking about trying the new 2.6.0-beta9 so do you know if it is very good for acpi.
Thanks

smellycheezeboy,
I do not know about the patch, just remember, google is your friend.
supposedly 2.6 kernels have much better support for acpi

If I can help here, I have the same laptop as your.
The gentoo-sources kernel already include the acpi patch afais. So you dont need to apply another patch. ACPI work well with it ( no resume and standy but fan stop and the laptop is cooler ).
And yes, the 2.6 kernel make a really good step in supporting acpi right out the box. It need some work but it's better than 2.4 kernel |

My acpi doesn't seem to be working with 2.4.20. There is no /proc/acpi file and the fan runs all the time.
Is there anything that you did special to get it to work?
Thanks

When you say 2.4.20, is it gentoo-sources or a vanilla 2.4.20?
vanilla 2.4 dont have a good acpi support. I recommend you to emerge gentoo-sources.
When you make you menuconfig be sure to check this option :
| Code: |
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> ACPI Support
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Ac Adapter
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Battery
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Button
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Fan
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Processor
General Setup -> ACPI Support -> Thermal zone
|
I have compiled all this directly into the kernel.
I have not check Toshiba laptop extras and Debug statement.
After checking that, recompile your kernel and enjoy. It will surely work, you have exactly the same kernel as mine. |

Hi
I had some problems with ACPI working on my Presario 713EA. I have tried several kernels end tried to patch them all with the ACPI patch from sourceforge. I ended up with kernel 2.6.3 and patched it but nothing would work and in menuconfig all the options seemed right.... I have even removed all the Compaqs from ACPI blacklist.c
Nothing would help....
Finally I realized that the Compaq BIOS could be the problem and went to their website and downloaded the newest update. The problem was the that the only way of updating BIOS was from windows XP.... so i made an extra partition for WIN XP and after a couple of hours (thanks Bill ...) I managed to update BIOS. And guess what.... IT WORKED!!!! ACPI works flavlessly!! The Compaqs BIOS was "bad"
I guess that updating the BIOS should be one of the first things to do, but you know... This may aply to all 700 series of Compaq
So if any of you have tried everything... try the bios, hope that you can update it without Win XP |

I got ACPI working when I upgraded to gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.1. All the ACPI was enabled by default but you have to make sure that you disable Symmetric Mulit-Processing support in Processor type and features. This causes the Local APIC support option to come up. Make sure this is disabled also. Recompile, Copy, Reboot and the ACPI should work.
