If you're scared to defaults it's not my fault.

Cynede ... another example of how systemd advocacy is played. Systemd isn't simply a "default", its the "standard base system" pushed as policy ... in practically every distribution. So, those not wanting it at some point find it pushed on them, ie, they can't build usbutils without it (thanks to Tom Gunderson). So quit with this "holywar", "hate", "scared", "not my fault", nonsense ... we (those not wanting systemd ... or udev, or dbus) find it increasingly difficult to avoid ... and seeing as you're all for "choice" you should recognise that our choices are rapidly narrowing due to that policy.

In practically every discussion on the subject, systemd advocates will invoke the terms "holywar", "hate", etc, etc ... these are nothing but attempts to make us seem unreasonable ... and we have grown tired of it, we are not the unreasonable parties in this debacle, we simply don't appreciate that our choices are being removed as a direct result of systemd policy. So, I'd suggest you take some time to think about what it is your advocating, and more importantly how.

best ... khay

If i can give my opinion:

Try Calculate Linux, Try Sabayon, Try Funtoo!

Try them all, for a day or a week. Check their configurations and solutions. Write what you like and what you dont like.

Then, after having some idea of the thing, go to a clean gentoo instalation.

After that, do something like i have done, a git repository of you configurations: https://bitbucket.org/alexandre_pereira/gentoo-portage ( so you can configure it once, update on all machines everywhere ).

You are entering a world where you will encounter more than you can grasp at first ( i dont mean problems , but "oportunities" ).

Lets be clear : your final, prodution result will be based on a clean gentoo, but first get some ideas and opinions. I am a strong beleiver of always checking what other people are doing.

I personally like Calculate Linux much more than Sabayon, although Sabayon is very nice, I would only recommend it if after instalation you could do an emerge -e @world without any problem or conflict. Since you cannot !!!, i only recommend as to see what good ideas you might like from it.
Also there are hundreds of posts in this forum with good ideas and recommendations, do read it.

The final box is "your" gentoo, and you dont have to follow any standard or default. ( where in sabayon or calculate , you do, or are strongly coerced to ! ).
