I'm wondering if a 17 MB big BIOS upgrade ISO image (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/gjuj18us.iso) is empty or if I do miss here something(the mount itself works fine, the tails.iso shows that it works) :

$ sudo mount -o loop bios.iso /mnt/media/
mount: /dev/loop0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

ls /mnt/media/

$ sudo umount /mnt/media/

$ sudo mount -o loop tails.iso /mnt/media/
mount: /dev/loop0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

$ ls /mnt/media/
EFI isolinux live utils

$ sudo umount /mnt/media/

weird seems to be somehow compressed with a password or i do something wrong...

and there is another iso in it called 8001.iso. binwalk gives another batch of lines for the 8001.iso

BTW, thx for the hint of app-misc/binwalk
UpdateFWIW today this worked : http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade#Booting_image_with_GRUB2

Look up eltorito, and tools like geteltorito.pl and isobar. I've in the past tried http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_update_without_optical_disk with grub and IIRC it worked just once, but not since. Might give grub2 a shot eventually.

(dunno, why this won't work yesterday, the only change since yesterday was that I fully uncharged both batteries over night, charged them today and tried it again).

very fishy that lenovo first puts spyware on their computers and now encrypted lzma archives in their bios update disks. well for myself i decided to never buy lenovo products. too fishy what they really do. i do not see a reason to encryp a bios update disc in such a fashion in the first place except when oyu want to hide spyware backdoors or something else which may be plausible but hard to prove
