NeddySeagoon,

I just have done emerge --sync and eselect opengl list shows one selected: xorg-x11.
Now - Need to emerge world?
Before it , need to do something with changes I have done during this topic?
Rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf_broken
emerge -1 xf86-video-vesa

Thanks

pmam,

You appear to be installing one version of the X Server and running another.
Since you can only have one version installed at a time, I don,t really understand how that can happen.

emerge --sync then update world with
Code:
emerge -uDNav @world

Look at the list to see if you have any eselect updates.

Also post the Xorg.0.log file that you got after you installed the vesa driver.
We can look at that while your update runs.

I already had done it - please take a look in previous post.

Now I am going to emerge -uDNav @world and vesa driver still remain ( do not unmerge it).

pmam,

Sorry about that.
Code:
[    21.755] (II) Module vesa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[    21.755]    compiled for 1.15.2, module version = 2.3.3
[    21.755]    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[    21.755]    ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 15.0
[    21.755] (EE) module ABI major version (15) doesn't match the server's version (18)

Its the same error. The vesa driver was built for the wrong Xorg. The module is older too.
In the case of the intel driver, you have the latest one.

What is the time and date on /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so ?
ls -l will show it

NeddySeagoon,

Quote:

Please explain what does it mean?

I do not know if it helps but recently I added to make.conf: VIDEO_CARDS="intel i915" -
I had a process regarding drivers and xorg as you can see in this topic:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1009552-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html

Thanks

pmam,

VIDEO_CARDS="intel" is correct. There used te be several different intel drivers i845, i915 and intel. They have all been merged into one called intel naw.
VIDEO_CARDS="intel i915" is harmless. There is no i915 any more.

You do not need the vesa driver. Its a very old, slow simple driver and will work with any graphics card made since about 1998.
Its a good driver to try for problem solving.

Try
Code:
emerge -uDNav @world --backtrack=30
As you are up to date, it should do nothing.
If it finds something, post the on screen output and let it run.

NeddySeagoon,

I unemerged vesa and changed to VIDEO_CARDS="intel", and before emerge -uDNav @world –backtrack=30 I get:
[ebuild R] media-libs/mesa-10.3.7-r1.
after emerge finished I see this: 'Switching to xorg-x11 OpenGL interface... done
USE=”bindist” was not set. Potentially patent encumbered code was enabled. Please see patents.txt for an explanation.'

Quote:

How post the on screen output ?

Need to do somthing with: 'Rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf_broken'?

Still no X server.. What is left to do? Re-emerge xorg?

Please advise!

Thanks

I would say a clear of xorg (un-merge) then re-emerge. something is facilitating building drivers against an older abi

Naib,

I unmerge x11 and then:
Code:
emerge --ask x11-base/xorg-server

But still no X server...

When I check with eix - do not know why there is [?] instead of [I] near:
[?] x11-base/xorg-drivers
I have this mark [?] near some other packages and in other machine, but maybe it is not ok...

Thanks

I believe i915 is still used to build mesa?

Well that wouldn't have gotten X working, this was a separate issue with eix and its database.

Back to X...

The REALLY confusing thing here is that the drivers are being built to be compatible with a different Xorg. Which would imply rebuilding hte drivers were not actually committed to the main tree so xorg is still loading the old drivers...

you "testing" is showing /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so has a newer date --> it is being updated.

Yes - That what I saw yesterday, but today I re-emerge some packages like: x11-base/xorg-server, x11-base/xorg-x11, x11-base/xorg-drivers -
and now I do not see this directory at all:
Code:
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/

under modules directory the is no drivers directory??

which would imply not all the USE flags or additional make.conf flags are set to instruct Xorg to build these packages. This would make sense now.

so... could you paste your make.conf and emerge --info

pmam,

This is a bit of a long shot.
We have established that your Xorg drivers are being updated - Look in Xorg.0.log
We have established that the Xorg drivers are not being built against the the Xorg installed by emerge.
Look in the Xorg.0.log file. This is supported by the indirect evidence that only you are having this issue.

It follows that your Xorg drivers are being built against some other xorg.

As root, run
Code:
find  / -iname xorg
this command will search your entire filesystem for files with xorg in their pathname.
Please post the result.

I suspect you have some xorg files not installed by emerge.

-- edit --
I get
Code:
# find  / -iname xorg
/usr/bin/Xorg
/usr/lib64/xorg
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg
/usr/include/xorg

Also post the output of
Code:
export $PATH
as root.

pmam,

Thats correct for files installed by portage. I was hoping you might have some more in /usr/local/.... as they would be found before files installed by portage.

--- edit ---

Just to close the loop run equery b on
Code:
/usr/bin/Xorg
/usr/lib64/xorg
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg
/usr/include/xorg
and tell the packages and versions that provide them
