On a new Dell Precision 5810 after installing Gentoo I receiving the following message when attempting to boot. This comes up before any grub menu: "Selected boot device failed. Press any key to reboot the system."

I installed using BIOS (ie. not EFI) with a GPT partition scheme. The Dell BIOS is set to "LEGACY" with secure boot "OFF". Per Gentoo Handbood install instructions I set up the following partition table:
Code:
Model: ATA ST1000DM003-1ER1 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 1000GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number  Start   End     Size    File system     Name    Flags
 1      1049kB  4194kB  3146kB                  grub    bios_grub
 2      4194kB  138MB   134MB   ext2            boot
 3      138MB   33.7GB  33.6GB  linux-swap(v1)  swap
 4      33.7GB  139GB   105GB   ext4            rootfs
 5      139GB   1000GB  862GB   ext4            data1

For grub in /etc/portage/make.conf I have
GRUB_PLATFORMS="pc"

Any idea why grub is not loading on the new Dell? If providing more information would help, please ask.

(I am thinking of trying again again using MBR instead of GPT)

Thanks to the following paragraph in the Gentoo Handbook I solved the issue:

Quote:
Some buggy BIOSes or EFIs configured to boot in BIOS/CSM/legacy mode might also have problems with booting from GPT labeled disks. If that is the case, it might be possible to work around the problem by adding the boot/active flag on the protective MBR partition which has to be done through fdisk with the -t dos option to force it to read the partition table using the MBR format.

So I guess this means I really have a GPT partition table but the Dell now thinks it is in MBR format and that works.
