|

Hi all,
Two few simple questions, which I imagine folks can answer. I did a bit of searching but failed to come up with anything.
First, I run an old computer at home and have been using the 173* nvidia binary blob series. Recently I was notified that this series would be masked due to some security issues. Any idea whether further blobs that don't have this problem are on the way?
Second, to upgrade my kernel I switched to nouveau (painless). However, aesthetically I prefer my console not to use the framebuffer. What can I say? I'm an old fart. How do I revert to the original console?
Best,

you may check the nvidia homepage itself.
there you will see the status of your cards and the support time period.
using the open source part may be the smartest choice regarding security issues ... |

Whenever, or if, nvidia decides to make new versions.

There's a few options:
- Disable fbcon entirely (not really an option since nouveau requires it)
- Add video=640x480 to the boot cmdline; this gets you a VGA-sized fbcon that *should* look the same.
- Leave the screen as-is and use a bigger compiled-in console font as the default.
- Install kmscon and tweak everything to your liking, but that's a huge pile of code you might not want (plus it won't work if you go back to the old driver).
