|
|
Hello,
I think I'm having problems that might be related to GRUB and XFS.
At first I tried to install Gentoo 1.3b (with xfs), but after I got through the installation, grub would not load ("Error 5"). Then, thinking that it might be due to the new gcc or some other problem in 1.3, I tried to install gentoo 1.2 (with xfs), and when grub loads, it immediatly reboots my system.
I am going to try to install 1.3b with ext3 a bit later and will see if that works, but before then I would just like to know if there is a known problem with the above configuration.
When I set up grub everything reported ok (and I triple checked the menu.lst file, and commands I used to install grub).
I had a linux system with grub and xfs on this same system with the same configuration with no problem at all (that was gentoo 1.1)
I've installed LILO, and gotten my system to boot and work correctly. |

No. GRUB works here with XFS on the root partition just fine, and it will even find kernels on an XFS /boot, if that is separate. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I am using XFS for my 100MB /boot partition (hda1) and also for my 40GB / partition (hda3) -- swap is at hda2 and is, of course, swapfs. I use grub and it is installed into my master boot record at (hd0,0). My grub setup is basically exactly like the one in the Gentoo Build guide. So I know of no issues. I have setup similar configurations on four different machines now, so it seems to be pretty good (no strange occurences for me anyway).
Oh yeah, I am using the Gentoo 1.3b and GCC3.1 -- Since that was in question too.

I find it very strange thaht your computer reboot just after grub. Did you verify you activated xfs support in the kernel and did you emerge xfsprogs.
And before a forget i hope you are using the xfs kernel or a vanilla kernel.
I sure since you already use xfs whit gentoo you did all that but i can't see anything else.
An other cause for your machine to reboot is the runlevel but i am pretty sure its not that (it would a least start linux and reboot after).
I hope this solve your problem but i doubt it dose |

Well contrary to the information in the Build Guide there is XFS support in the Gentoo Sources. I am using them, promise!

Yup, I have XFS enabled in the kernel (gentoo-sources has XFS) and I have xfsprogs installed.
This *is* strange considering the fact that I get different errors with different versions of gentoo (1.2 (reboot on grub loading (IE the menu doesn't even come up)) and 1.3b (Error 5)).
I'm sure I did everything right. I've installed 1.3b about 3 times, and each time I get more and more anal about entering the commands
I'll mess around some more with grub, and then try ext3. |
