Did a world update, now kde/X(?) will not start [SOLVED]

After a world update yesterday, I am no longer able to login. After entering name and password, I return to the login screen.

I tried to change over to xdm (rather than kdm), but I have the same behaviour there.

I'm not sure what this is related to. kdm.log looks like this

Is the login screen X?

If it is, I guess X is working.

Not sure where to look for the problem

I cannot find anything extraordinary in the logs.
/var/log/messages just gives me pam_unix session opened for user micke, followed by a pam_cd_connector nox 11 mode, followed by a pam_unix session closed for user micke.
So I'm logged in for a split second. Also if I enter the wrong password, I get the normal failure sequence.

These are the packages that where emerged. I have tried to return to the previous xorg version, as well as mesa, but that did not help.

Any other packages to focus on?

It looks like you DO have a couple of fatal errors in your kdm.log:

Ran into same problem.
I run ~amd64.
The culprit was openssl.
After resyncing I got openssl-1.0.2-r1 and I could start kde again.
Read the changelog of dev-libs/openssl.

It's the first entry,about breaking ABI of several packages.
It took me also the better part of a day.
One of the things I tried was re-emergeing kdelibs (for kinit4).
The emerge failed.
When I did the sync I noticed the new openssl.
After it installed all worked again,also kdelibs successfully emerged.

I'm at loss. I have tried;

1. Syncing
2. Rebuilding openssl
3. Rebuilt kdelibs, mesa, xorg-server xf86-video-ati consolekit dbus
4. Rebuilt all packages that where successfully built/installed during the world update
5. Rebuilt xorg-x11 emptytree (560+ packages)

Is there a way to enhance logging? Or am I missing something vital?

I'm on ~amd64. amd R6 r260X graphics card. Box was working just fine.
Kernel 3.18.1 Gentoo (have not recompiled this since some weeks)
startx does not work, not as a user, not as root (after having dont /etc/init.d/xdm stop)
Edit: Apparently, X is running while standing on the login screen. /usr/bin/X can be seen in ps. Not sure why I missed this before. So I guess this means that it is not X in it self that is the cause, but something else, like PAM for instance.
