TUN/TAP is built-in but unable to start open VPN

Gentoo is great! I love it, but I got a problem with VPN. I don't need to run server, just client to connect to my VPN provider. No matter how many reinstall I try, and keep the following turned on

Device Drivers -> Network device support
<*> Universal TUN/TAP device driver support

I get an error saying

tux openvpn # /etc/init.d/openvpn start
* Starting openvpn ...
* TUN/TAP support is not available in this kernel
* ERROR: openvpn failed to start

I reinstalled like 3 times now, and turned off the kernel option on, off then back on but no success. What could be causing this and what should I post that might help diagnose this problem?
