[SOLVED] Pulseaudio microphone does not work

I have pulseaudio-5.0-r6 and playback works but my USB microphones do not. pavucontrol's vumeter indicates that it's receiving an audio signal but neither arecord nor skype detect any sound. I've followed the Gentoo PulseAudio Wiki pretty much to the letter.

Any debugging hints will be gratefully appreciated.

[SOLVED] Chalk this up under "sheer idiocy." Evidently I had symlinked /usr/bin/pavucontrol to /usr/local/bin/pulseaudio because I could never remember "pavucontrol". Once I removed the symlink, PulseAudio worked for all microphones, including under skype, but I'm not exactly sure why the symlink interfered. [/SOLVED]
