Kmix is missing bass and treble settings, what to do? I would like to have some more bass in some games.

I don't use kmix, but have you considered setting up a graphic equalizer for your alsamixer following this guide: https://patrick-nagel.net/blog/archives/180? alsaequal is in portage.

Edit: This turned out to be fairly painful and to not work at all when I emerged it to follow along. Probably not a good idea.

Kmix can be configured as to what is shown in the popup.
Did you check that?

To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo,has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.
