Apologies if this is an FAQ or otherwise covered; I searched around a while and didn't find anything quite on topic.
Is there a way in modern udev to say "just bring up everything that looks like a network interface"? I surmise that there is, because during recent installations with livecds, I'll boot on a box which has a couple of wired interfaces and a wifi interface, and when my livecd boots, there they all are. But after I get my system configured, only the ones for which I created symlinks in /etc/init.d are actually present.
How can I get the system to bring them all up by default, and let me refine the list if I care to?

Missing kernel modules for your cards?
Also not enough info in your post, the following outputs could help:

lspci
dmesg | grep net
lsusb (in case of a usb net device)
ifconfig -a
openrc version
udev version
eudev version (in case you use it)

Reading more closely you post it's not clear what you mean.
I your system they are all there, ifconfig -a but don't show in ifconfig?
And by "bring them all up by default" do you mean ALL up with ip, netmask, broadcast? Or simply to show as activated ifconfig ethX up?
I believe there's no such a behaviour in Gentoo, that would be a sweeping "default".
LiveCD's networking is configured so it's not a default.
Anyways, if you can clarify what do you mean by being 'present' it would help. |

Just start the dhcpcd service, and it will do the job.

So the next question is, how does dhcpcd know? Maybe it's time to do some code perusing…
