I've got an older Dell server with an SAS raid controller. First four disks are configured as raid10, that's sda. However, I've also got another five SATA drives plugged in but they're not getting sd* files in /dev. The drives in question are recognized by the hardware just fine, and also by dmesg:

There is a file /dev/sdb, but running fdisk /dev/sdb gives "fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdb: No medium found" ... So I don't know what's going on there.

have a look at /proc/scsi/scsi content, it should list your arrays and your physical disks.
my controller only enable sd* naming on arrays, not on disks (so any disks attach to it, must be handle by using an array with it).
i'm not sure if my controller could create an array made with one disk but i suppose it depend on the bios controller version/model.
did you just plug the disks or plug them and setup an array for each of them? |

The disks in question are just plugged in as individual disks, I haven't created an array/virtual disk/whatever on the physical controller with them (though the controller does see them); my plan was to use these disks to experiment with software RAID. |

Well, looks like for me, you could use any drives as long as they are attach to an array (that is for me a minimum 2 drives to build one). Even it list my drives as scsi devices, only the arrays are handle (and that's a good thing, you don't want someone mess with a drive that is part of the array itself).
Build an test array with like 2 drives, pretty sure you will see that new array while not seeing the 3 missing drives still.
To sum-up, if you want software raid, don't use an hardware raid controller to handle them. |
