|

Hi,
I'm trying to watch/record something using my Logitech Quickcam 9000 Pro...but no video is shown. It seems the camera is properly detected,
Quote: | [ 105.852055] usb 1-10: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci
[ 106.097115] usb 1-10: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=0990

[ 106.097405] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device <unnamed> (046d:0990)

[ 106.283647] usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio |
but when I try guvcview (or google-talk-plugin through gmail) I can only see a black screen. guvcview repeatedly outputs the message
Quote: | Ignoring empty buffer ... |
and google-talk-plugin says there is something wrong with the complement.
The camera was working fine some time ago (I can't remember when was the last time I tested it) and it's working fine in Windows....
Any ideas?
Cheers!!
UPDATE: it's working fine in cheese...but still annoying since I can't use it for videocalls in gmail |

I see: Quote: | [ 2.411216] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 2.416119] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device HD Pro Webcam C920 (046d:082d)

[ 2.417398] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
[ 2.417400] USB Video Class driver (1.1.1) | and IIRC several generations of different logitech webcams have been identified by name both in the kernel output (dmesg) and by lsusb. I note your output does not have 'usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo' suggesting kernel .config for usb may need attention. _________________ Defund the FCC. |

thanks for your prompt reply, DONAHUE.
Since the camera is working in Cheese, I don't think it's a setup problem... The webcam not working in google-talk may be related to this
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=382080
...and about guvcview...the most recent (masked) version in Portage, 1.7.3, is more than a year old (it doesn't work for me either)...so maybe this is related to some change in the kernel or whatever that needs to be accounted for in the code of guvcview...or maybe it's something else completely unrelated
Cheers!! |

What kernel are you running? I noticed the same exact problem with my Microsoft Lifecam Cinema. I was using gentoo-sources-3.16.5 and was noticing this problem. I reverted back to gentoo-sources-3.14.14 and the problem went away. I haven't done any checking to see what the differences are between the two kernels yet.
But I was going to try unmasking gentoo-sources-3.17.2 and giving that a go to see if the problem exists. _________________ John5788 |

Same kernel version here...I'd like to try with a new version of Guvcview, but I don't know the first thing about writing ebuilds and I can't find an ebuild for a version newer than 1.7.3...so, for the time being I'll stick with Cheese.
If you find out something, please let me know. |

You do not have to make an ebuild if you just want to test it out.
Download the source from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/guvcview/files/source/
Unpackage it:
Code: | [/home/john5788/Downloads :: 01:28 AM :: 2]
[john5788@john5788]
$ tar -zxvf guvcview-src-2.0.1.tar.gz |
Then build it:
Code: | [/home/john5788/Downloads/guvcview-src-2.0.1 :: 01:29 AM :: 2]
[john5788@john5788]
$ ./configure && make
checking whether make supports nested variables... yes
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p
checking for gawk... gawk
...
|
Find the binary file and execute it. Although I have a feeling even the latest might not solve the problem. _________________ John5788 |

I was worried about unsatisfied requirements, version mismatch...and, in fact,
Quote: | configure: error: Package requirements (sdl2 >= 2.0) were not met:
No package 'sdl2' found |
It's probably not so hard to fix, but right now I don't feel like manually installing stuff just to try guvcview Cheese is also ok (though it has quite a lot of requirements). |

I upgraded to gentoo-sources-3.17.4 and I am still seeing this problem . Reverted back to 3.14.14 again _________________ John5788 |
