I've added info about dont_load_bitmap for those with long mount times with Reiser4 to the Reiser4 Gentoo FAQ.
And you can use Reiser4 in geek-sources overlay if you don't like patching. _________________ Reiser4 Gentoo FAQ [25Dec2016] |

Does Resier4 support booting without any initramfs? As I can say for me, that is one of the biggest deciding point in even testing it out. I've been without a initrd/initramfs for over 15 years and have yet to see any reason why I should do one now. The only part of using a initramfs that be tempting, is using lvm, but even that is marginal at best for my usage. From what I've seen, lvm won't do me much good, when I don't have the hardware to do a raid setup. The only part of lvm, that I may like to use, is the snapshot for my rootfs, as I'm expecting that drive to fail relatively soon (loosing that, isn't that big of deal, as I can easily rebuild my system again). |

I use it with kernel without initramfs and loadable modules since 2006. _________________ Reiser4 Gentoo FAQ [25Dec2016] |

reiser3 was the total crap i ever had. i found a bug and the guy charged me money to fix his crap. kicked the bucket fixed it myself and went to ext2/3 ... And kept the bug for myself, I never told him where it was because of his crappy attitude, pay me money ... my box was unbootable at that time
i really believe only ext is the future. the others are nice things to play around but never relyable. i had one box with xfs and was laggy as hell, switched to ext and it was gone. zfs sounds nice and some others too but i really do not trust them.
too much fuss with reiser3.
a file system is a critcal component, no fuss, should just work and be sturdy |

I joined the forum explicitly to respond to this after I saw the results of the vote on the reiser4 mailing list. One feature that would fit in the "other" category is the ability to resize the FS. That doesn't prevent usage but I wanted to mention it here. |
