I've recently installed Gentoo on a system which will not update. I also have problems building OpenSSL, and they are why I decided to run an update.

I am running 'emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --newuse @world' to update the system. It fails while building sys-apps/coreutils.

Here is the end of the build log:
Code:

"Illegal instruction" usually is a "you blew it" kind of a problem, but with "-march=native" it shouldn't really happen unless either your CPU wasn't fully supported by this particular version of gcc yet or you've stumbled upon a gcc bug.
Was "-march=native" in your CFLAGS right from the start or did you have another value there first ?
On (most likely) unrelated note: this machine seems to have very little memory...

I set march=native option while doing the install at the step that option is set in the handbook. Originally it was not there in the stage3.

Can you replicate this error using following command:
Code:
MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge -1 coreutils

In some cases, illegal instruction can be caused by bad RAM causing a bit flip in the code (either at compile time or when the program runs). I think a badly overheated CPU could also raise a bogus illegal instruction exception.

Yes, the same problem occurs.

I don't see why the same problem should happen over and over in that case.

I thought I should post the problems I had building openssh to use the openssl I built rather than the bindist. This is why I ran the update, and the error might have a similar cause. So I hope this might give more clues on what is happening.

Code:

I don't see why the same problem should happen over and over in that case.
As I said, if it happened at the time of compilation, then the installed program would be bad, and would always fault. If the bit flip was at runtime, it would not be perfectly reproducible.

This problem happened with the 16-10-2014 Gentoo hardened Stage 3. The checksum verified for it, and I didn't have the problem with the older 09-10-2014 stage 3. I suspect that the stage 3 tarball itself is at fault. The problem happened right after the install.
