I success to pass to stage 2 before few days, but later when I try do it again it faild with the same problem. Important to write that I used same CD with same configurations settings in both cases.
After i read about it - I compiled the gcc befor running the bootstarp.sh abd it work fine!
I dont know what had been changed in the last few days, interesting...
thanks for the solution ! |

I just ran into this problem today.
Its frightfully annoying, since I've spent since wednesday fiddling around with this trying to get it going.
I "solved" it in the end by compiling it with the compiler flag:
CHOST="i486-pc-linux-gnu"
I tried to do the above suggestion of compiling GCC before the rest of the mess, but it then fails on ncurses and other files.
No other options were changed greatly or made radical and harsh.
Would really love to have even a temporary stage1 file that has cured this broken install. Damn annoying. |

Incidentally, after the bootstrapping (or emerging) fails, emerge doesn't work with most other files.
Also, when I try to chroot again into /mnt/gentoo/, env-update fails saying that /sbin/dependancy.pl is missing or somesuch. |

This is the bug after a failed bootstrapping:
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
[gcc-3.2.3-r2] bash: line 1: /sbin/depscan.sh: No such file or directory |

I had this same problem with zlib on my athlon-tbird. Seems as though I have resolved it by using the older August Stage 1 tarball. |

Hello,
I just installed everything from a stage1 and it all works as normal now!
The new bootstrap (v1.53) is downloaded and everything works well. |

So do you do emerge rsync inplace of the emerge sync? Or before/after it? |

I just installed normally using the standard stage1 tarball. Then as soon as its extracted I use winscp to copy across the latest bootstrap.sh. It worked fine in the end. |

All the mirrors don't have it =( Have been purged.

I've put the x86 Stage1 file from August up for anonymous FTP on my server:
ftp://x-serv2.orionsector.net/Gentoo/OLD/x86/1.4/stages/x86/stage1-x86-1.4-20030806.tar.bz2
I'll keep it up for a couple of weeks for everyone.
The server is limited to 5 simultaneous sessions due to bandwidth restrictions.
Cheers,

I had this problem as well when using the same Stage 1. The fix for me was to merge gcc before I ran bootstrap.sh.
I of course didn't find out about the problem until after I had gotten stuck and having this as my first install I didn't know what to do. I ended up restarting the LiveCD and reformatting the partitions and starting over, this time making sure to try to merge gcc first. Surely there was a better way, maybe someone more knowledgeable could tell us; but it worked like a charm.
Then my power went out right after bootstrap finished... thats another story. Oh and a note to other n00bs. The installation instructions are wrong when they suggest that you go watch pulp fictions when you are emerging kde. Watch every movie you own, I'm in my 12th hour right now. Would it have been possible to run [emerge kde $] so I could have done other things? _________________ Life is a tragedy for those who feel; and a comedy for those who think.

I used the stage3 tarball, but followed the stage1 instructions in the install guide. Downloading the bigger tarball sucked, but at least the bootstrap worked. |

Hehehehe, don't feel bad. One of my boxes (P-III 450 w/256 megs RAM) has taken over 24 hours, and still has 10 packages to go........

Ok...I've tried installing from stage 1 tarball dated 09/10/2003 and all has failed on multiple times. I found this thread in the forums and am ready to go at it again, probably because I refuse to give up and go back to Red Hat. I have a couple of questions I need help with though.
1) What is the best way to re-format my partitions to start over fresh?
2) Should I go back to the August stage 1 tarball or should I use the stage 2 tarball and then bootstrap? If I should use the stage2, which one should I use?
3) What are the best settings for my make.conf (CHOST, CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS) file given below:
Athlon XP 1700 Palomino (as far as I know)
512mb Crucial PC2100 ECC ram
Gigabyte 7VAXP mobo
Multiple NIC's: Intel Pro 100 Server and DLink 530TX+
Sound and Video are auto detected fine.
Thanks in advance for all of the help. I'm a noob but I'm dedicated to making this darn thing work......

Primera,
1. Follow the instructions in the installation guide it will reformat your partitions for you.
2. Either way takes about the same amount of time.
3. If you look in this forum, you will see a thread for ATHALON XP flags, it will give you a lot if info that you are looking for.

Ha! That makes my 14 hours seem like a walk in the park.
Primera, you should follow the instructions on making the filesystem in the installation guide. For me I didn't have to repartition, all I needed to do was rerun mkreiserfs on my / directory and I was ready to begin again. Just be sure that you run emerge -O gcc before you begin bootstrap.sh (after emerge sync) and you should be alright.
There is a good XP flag thread here...https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=88860&highlight=athlon+xp
If you are like me, some of these will not work, but luckily it tells you that they won't work before it starts compiling (no waiting 3 hours to find out) you can just remove the offending ones and try again. Good luck! _________________ Life is a tragedy for those who feel; and a comedy for those who think.

Well...
I just wanted to report that doing 'emerge -O gcc' prior to bootstrap seems to have fixed all of my problems. Thanks everyone for all of the help. |
