Hi there,

I'm new here, pleased to meet you, there's a difficulty.

Tin Hat Linux run entirely from RAM, but my laptop, HP G62 total memory is 2961080 kB.

Could I configure Gentoo, akin to Puppy Linux, booting from a CD, runs from memory, and then saving data on a USB flash?

The reason why I am here.

Well you may use a live-cd setup / disc.

But you may specify why do you want such a behaviour.

i think there is still knoppix around which does this out of the box from its big livecd

regarding your question it is sure possible but I have never set it up so far. you need to find the scripts to build such a system or create them yourself

If you need "read-only" system that doesn't save any data to drive, there is no such a thing "ready-to-use". At least I can't found it.
However it's possible to do it by yourself. I have such a usb installation. All the places that tends to collect/accumulate data while you works (/home, /var, /root) mounted at ramdisk, so nothing will be saved after reboot.

Teegrins and welcome, sanya-sanya!

In short, yes, as mentioned by others already, in the form of “live CDs/DVDs” for example. One rather good Gentoo-based is SystemRescueCd, but it is rather minimal (which is either good or not so good depending on what one is looking for).

That said, I'll also mention the latest LiveDVD which allows for persistent changes to be made, as is described here. I suspect that could have its uses. ^^

Again, welcome, and may you enjoy your stay!

I used to read old books at Gallica Bibliothèque nationale de France, so that the hard disk drive and ventilator noise bother me.

Sven Vermeulen's Linux Sea led to Gentoo, and Machtelt Garrels' book, Introduction to Linux, essence, "GNU/Linux is all about becoming more self-reliant" led to linux.
