Hi I'm trying to upgrade portage from version 2.1.10.65 to 2.2.8-r2 but I get the following EAPI 5 warnings,
any ideas?

Cheers,

Code:
profiles # emerge -1v =portage-2.2.8-r2

 * IMPORTANT: 22 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "dev-python/pyxattr[python_targets_python2_7]" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- dev-python/pyxattr-9999::gentoo (masked by: EAPI 5)
- dev-python/pyxattr-0.5.3::gentoo (masked by: EAPI 5)
- dev-python/pyxattr-0.5.2::gentoo (masked by: EAPI 5)

The current version of portage supports EAPI '4'. You must upgrade to a
newer version of portage before EAPI masked packages can be installed.
(dependency required by "sys-apps/portage-2.2.8-r2[xattr,python_targets_python2_7]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "=portage-2.2.8-r2" [argument])
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

looks like you will have to disable xattr until you have the newer portage installed, then re-enable it and re-emerge.

thanks adding -xattr to /etc/make.conf and manually upgrading portage fixed the issue:
