Woo .. back to Gentoo, new to the forum, not new to Gentoo (although it has been a few years).

Trying to get Blender to build, this is an absolute requirement and something I kind of took for granted before I started :?

I did manage to get a specific 2.70 something to build by adding few lines about PYTHON TARGETS to my make.conf and while that worked ok, it tanked most everything else that uses python and prevented 'emerge -uD @world' from working. In short, a real mess. I commented it out of the world file and reverted the nonsense to get things working sane again. It's runs and that's something but it's far from ideal.

Every version of Blender is now masked
http://packages.gentoo.org/package/media-gfx/blender

Is there a suggested version to go for or guide? I don't mind unmasking stuff but I would rather not have to try and resolve bumping python system wide. The whole PYTHON TARGETS thing is kind of over my head and a bit TMI. Kinda just needs to work and not come back to bite me.

help ?

Well, if you are just wanting blender to work, for me I had to add this line to my package.use to compile (this way it will only affect blender vs the entire system)
Code:

python_single_target_python3_3

Do note however, this will only work for getting blender-2.70* work, 2.71 depends on python 3.4; which even though I also have python 3.4 installed, those python flags are currently still masked, and emerge complained that it needed several other packages have python 3.4 unmasked for it. My run for compiling blender-2.70a-r3 didn't complain after I added that single line above, and one other (which may not affect you, but I also needed to add only more line in my package.use)
Code:

dev-cpp/glog gflags

Here's my use use flags for blender
Code:

media-gfx/blender-2.70a-r3  USE="boost bullet dds elbeem ffmpeg game-engine nls openal openexr openmp opennl sdl sse sse2 tiff -collada -colorio -cycles -debug -doc -fftw -jack -jpeg2k -ndof -openimageio -player -redcode -sndfile" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_3 -python3_4" PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_3 -python3_4"

On a second thought, I don't know if it will matter; but I do have my system 's default python set to 3.3 (I didn't think about switching it to 3.4, but I doubt it will affect it)
Code:

ct85711@Oate ~ $ eselect python list
Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.7
  [2]   python3.3 *
  [3]   python3.4
