If something isn't listed in http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml is it safe to assume it won't work or possibly have detrimental effects? Intels page on my processor lists it having sse4.1 and 4.2 in instruction sets, but the use-index.xml only has 4_1. Do I list them separately like sse4 sse4_1 sse4_2, or... ? |

The most recent lists of USE flags are in Portage (if not the same as the xml):
/usr/portage/profiles/use.desc: lists sse4_1
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc: sse4_1, sse4_2, and even sse4.1 and sse4.2*
(search "sse4")
I would add them all, for currently installed packages and future emerge.
(And after that: emerge -avuDN @world
as usual)
* Maybe good to file a bug for this, to have a uniform notation, as these flags seem to do the same thing.

Ah nice, thanks. Would there be a difference between putting 4_2 | 4.2? Would both mess things up? |

Both are needed, if you install packages that need one or the other. If no package use it, it's no problem at all. Even non- existing USE flags can be added. |
