|
|
Hello!
I am trying to use the standard procedure for creating audio devices on a Linux box. MAKEDEV audio returns:
mv: cannot move `mixer-' to `mixer': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `sequencer-' to `sequencer': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi00-' to `midi00': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `dsp-' to `dsp': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `audio-' to `audio': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `sndstat-' to `sndstat': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `mixer1-' to `mixer1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi01-' to `midi01': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `dsp1-' to `dsp1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `audio1-' to `audio1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi02-' to `midi02': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi03-' to `midi03': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `mpu401data-' to `mpu401data': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `mpu401stat-' to `mpu401stat': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi0-' to `midi0': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `rmidi0-' to `rmidi0': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `smtpe0-' to `smtpe0': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi1-' to `midi1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `rmidi1-' to `rmidi1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `smtpe1-' to `smtpe1': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi2-' to `midi2': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `rmidi2-' to `rmidi2': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `smtpe2-' to `smtpe2': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `midi3-' to `midi3': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `rmidi3-' to `rmidi3': Operation not permitted
mv: cannot move `smtpe3-' to `smtpe3': Operation not permitted
So I am left with a bunch of *- files.
Not to mention the wierd directory entry for dev:
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 dev
Anyone seen this problem yet? _________________ |

If you're using devfs, you don't need to (or want to) run MAKEDEV. /etc/devfsd.conf is generally where you want to make changes to the contents of /dev. Does rebooting clean things out any? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Ok.
Now I realize just how old I am getting.
I also realize that there is nothing in the realm of sound inside my /etc/devfsd.conf
Reboot doesn't help (although I wanted to do it to enable SB emulation on my motherboard, which hosts a VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller)
KDE just complains there is no /dev/dsp, which there isn't.
Dmesg says this about the sound system
devfs_mk_dir(sound): using old entry in dir: dfff25c0 ""
I will search the net to find more resources, but if there's a quick way (cut and paste) for /etc/devfsd.conf to add sound devices, i'd be delighted.
Thnx for info! _________________ |

Section 4.Sound of the Desktop Guide might help. Specifically, Code listing 24 & 25. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

As I got deeper and deeper into this, I realized that it's not really that mundane.
Nevertheless. I am now using ALSA drivers which seem to enable me to use sound devices as a regular user (a member of audio group though).
With the old OSS drivers the devfsd would manage the old-old devices, such as /dev/dsp or /dev/audio. The result is a symlink to a new-old /dev/sound/dsp or /dev/sound/audio. While the REAL devices had proper permissions and ownership, the linked ones were root.root owned and hed totally wrong permissions.
So much for ease of setup.
Now things seem to work out ok, apart from the unfortunate Kmix in KDE not being able to do anything. No sliders no controls, no nothing. Some source suggested that alsa-xmms should be emerged, but the sheer amount of dependencies put me off. Shouldn't KDE work with ALSA?
Oh, yes! There is an alsa conf file in /etc, that I am supposed to write in order to unmute the thingy on bootup. The information on this file is VERY RUSTIC to put it mildly. A bunch of monkeys typing the Encyclopedia Britanica would eventually get it right, but....
Any ideas on this Kmix problem? _________________ |
