GNOME 2 sometimes lockes up when logging off

About half the time when I log out of GNOME2, it locks up. The apps still sort of work, I can use KDE apps normally. I can switch between GTK apps but they are unresponsive. The taskbar and menu up top are completely unresponsive, but the taskbar shows which is the currently selected task.
Any ideas as why why this is happening?

i have the same problem. i wish i could tell you what it was.
gnome2 hangs at logout, sometimes with a blank screen.
i just ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the x-server and logout that way...
