It's Apple's direct suggestion to get IDE devices to work well (from the user manual for my G4).
If fact with this 6GB HDD set to master in Mac OS X I was constantly getting a beachball that stalled my entire system for about 2 mins every ten minutes or so, but with the switch to cable select it has worked flawlessly in OS X.
And in fact it is a Western Digital HDD, it was the one I ripped out of my beige G3 300. How does that affect me? _________________ sin(6cos(r)+5Ø)<=0.3 |

I am having a similar problem with Gentoo install on my iBook (600MHz with 30 GB drive). The install process is simply not finding my hard drive. I have the initial 15 GB partitioned off and ready to go for linux with the remaining space used for OSX.2. The only device I see showing up on my ide chain is the CD drive.
Any thoughts? Please let me know what additional info I can provide.
Thanks,
Greg |

that's really weird! I just got a 700MHz ibook with 30gb drive and i had no trouble.
check out my gentoo install document at http://www.desertsol.com/~kevin/ppc. I wrote down everything I could stand about partitioning and installing on that drive. maybe you did something strange when you partitioned in OSX??
I can put up my dmesg too later if you want, and we can see if we have the same drive or not.

I actually followed your install (nice docs!) as well as reading a lot on ibooklinux.net for their suggestions on partitioning. I have tried a few different approaches with no luck. The most recent approach has my linux partition being around 18GB and the 1st part on the disk. My OSX part is the 2nd and is around 10GB. Scrolling back through my dmesg output, I see that the disk is simply not discovered during the ide check. Only the CD is found (I have the DVD/CD/CD-RW drive).
Uggggg! |

| I don't know what to tell you. I will look at my dmesg tonight and see what it says about the hard drive, maybe there will be some hints there. I'll probably go ahead and post the whole thing, maybe there will be something different that will give us a clue. I'd be willing to bet it's the exact same type of hard drive! |

Looks identical to mine, except mine does not find the hard drive. I found some indications that their exists some bug with the kernel and this specific model, that occasionally the hard drive will not be detected when a CD is in the drive @ boot. I am going to try installing the old fashioned way by booting off a part on my hard drive with no CD. Hopefully I will get some time this weekend to play around with it.

pass hda=1,1,1 to the kernel at boot time. that should solve your problems |
