I suspect I'm having hardware problems but I thought I'd ask anyway.
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 4
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+
stepping : 8
cpu MHz : 2202.916
cache size : 1024 KB
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe (3COM 940 Gig nic)
1GB ECC memory
So far the machine has simply reset itself 3 times while doing a Gentoo AMD 64 install. None of the usual kenel panics messages, and no mysterious SEGV's in user space.
So, I have not yet finished the installation but it so far looks ok.
The people who assembled the computer said that I should run a memory test which I just started.
Any suggestions are welcome. |

It turns out that it likely is a hardware problem. I was able to reproduce a problem by doing a copy from one HDD to another. I would reliably get a "Check Error" with a bank number and a 64 bit address. When turning ECC off, I would get no such error (presumably with silent memory errors).
Back to the shop ...

A couple of new sticks of memory and all is now well.
.... oh even though it takes longer to install using Gentoo, it's nice to know that it's all just an emerge away and ready for 64bit use !
Great stuff guys ! |
