Hey all, I'm having a problem with devfs
I enabled it in menuconfig, recompiled (all according to the howto :P) and rebooted.. But gentoo still says I don't have devfs enabled at boot time..
Which wasn't very troublesome untill I tried to install the nvidia drivers for my videocard.. which, conveniently, require DevFS.
Now this is my first non-graphical install of linux (have tried mandrake before... rpm hell, thank god for emerge) and after 2 days messing around (under the guidance of a more knowledgable gentoo user through irc) I still haven't found the cause of devfs not functioning.
A search through here and google didn't give me any help either.
So I hope asking this will help.. thanks in advance

did you also check the
Code:
Automatically mount at boot

flag during menuconfig?
It doesn't harm to ask ;-)

regards,
Tom

Yes every setting I can think of is set correctly... that's why I don't understand this problem... I spent 2 days tweaking and recompiling, nothing worked. :x

I'm having trouble getting devfs installed as well.

I've installed gentoo twice and everything works like a charm except I get a message upon reboot that says I don't have devfs installed.

Where is it in the menuconfig? Am I just overlooking it?

Thanks,

Dan

one more questions "in the blue"
Are you sure you boot your new kernel?
I.e. you mounted your boot partition before the cp bzImage?

No offense ment, It happens once in a while to me (and others in these forums)
And it sounds like it has to be something that trivial, as it works here out of the box. The nontrivial task, as ever, is to locate the trivial thingie

rom

You know that could very well be the source of the problem!
Silly me... thanks alot I'm going to try it out now
I didn't realise that bzImage had to be put in the boot partition.. duh :) I always just put it in /boot
I hope to reply here for a last time in fluxbox :)

Many people made this silly mistake: copy bzimage to /boot and the boot partition is not mounted yet since Gentoo does not mount this partition by default. I still don't know if the boot partion is not mouned by default is a good idea. For me, I make the boot partion mounted by default since I compile the kernel may times. To prevent the problem of booting kernel if the boot partition is corrupted, I make backup of the boot partition and the /lib/modules to somewhere else. In case of problem, I just reformat the boot partition, restore the boot partion and/or the /lib/modules that I saved somewhere. I think it's better that way than make the boot partion unmounted by default.
