hi,
yesterday i had this weird problem and i was wondering if somebody could shed some light into it.
i had a 3c509 ISA nic and an SB Live! Value (PCI), everything was working fine with kernel compiled drivers instead of modules.
i compiled support into the kernel for a 3c905 (vortex) nic and swaped them, the new nic worked fine but i lost sound!!!
i couldnt find /dev/dsp1, only /dev/dspW was present, after several reboots i found in /proc/pci that the SB Live! card was listed, but reading all the messages from the boot screen i see something like:
emu10k1 pci IO space in use
also there was no /proc/interrupt assigned to it!!!
this is a dual boot machine so i went to windows and windows didnt even recognize the soundcard. i went back to my old nic and kernel and after 2 reboots it worked fine again.
does somebody know what could have happened? i really wanna get rid of this old ISA card.
details about the setup:
* using devfs (didnt modify anything)
* using gentoo1.2
* from top down on the pci slots first is the SBLive! then the 3c905
* this is an old abit bh6 mobo, an old celeron and 384M ram |

Hi,
Well, sometimes pci cards don't play well together! I would try two things first:
1. Go into your BIOS and make sure you deselect PnP OS, and then also choose "reset configuration data". After this, save and exit, then see if Windows sees both your cards. If not...try method two.
2. Move your sound card down to the bottom PCI slot (or at least not into a slot right next to your ethernet card.)
Hope that helps!

LibraMark,
I followed your tips and now it works!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I had PNPOS already disabled on my BIOS, I think it has always been that way but i never off thought of swapping slots, as soon as i did it worked like it was nothing at all. _________________ There has been an alarming increase in the number of things you know nothing about. |
