Hi, I want to reinstall my 486 gateway computer (now running debian) with Gentoo. But as you can imagine, no-one wants to compile a whole system on such a computer. Therefor, I want to change the USE and CFLAGS variables to fit the 486 on my XP1700+ machine, build all packages I want and install them on the 486. But I don't want to install all these packages on the XP.

The default action of 'emerge -b' is to perform the 'merge' step. In ebuild, one can specify not to perform this merge step. But ebuild is more difficult to feed, I want to do a --emptytree or something to automate the process somewhat.

Does anybody know how to do this :?:

Thanks

I'm not sure what you're trying to do can be done (yet). It might be easier to simply pull the HD from your 486, install it in the XP and then instal Gentoo that way.
