hello,

I have a Notebook with this Grafic card! The Problem is the Xconfiguration!

I can't use the ati drivers because they are only for 32 Bit Systems!

How can I get the Grafic Card functional (2d) in Xfree!

I need a configuration for Xfree with fbdev, vesa or something else!

THX for help

Frame buffers won't work right now with amd64. You could use the vesa driver. You could also use the binairy driver for your ATi card.

Did you check this thread for information ?

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=73260&highlight=ati+driver

If you need a quick configuration you could run XF86config in console and select the vesa driver when choosing for the card driver.

Hello,

thanks for answering! Do you use the ati driver?? I think the ati driver runs only in a 32 Bit System!

Which Version of Xfree and ati drivers you are using??

THX

I use the latest stable Xfree available for amd64. I don't use the ATi driver right now since the server that has a ati oem card is in repairs and won't run xfree anyway. The other amd64 machine that I have runs the latest Xfree but it run on a gf4mx. I use the vesa driver anyway. It's just a playtoy for the programmers so I set up a vnc terminal server on it. Even if it's 32bit you have a amd64 after all. It is a precompiled driver too I was thinking you could try it out and probably work.

[Edit] Here's a more "official" response :

Quote:
ATI Radeon

Higher end ATI Radeon cards such as the Radeon 9600 will not work in XFree86 4.3.0 using the radeon driver. You must use the vesafb driver only, otherwise you will get lockups, etc. If you use 4.3.99.902 (4.4 rc2) it will work, but many other applications do not yet support compiling against that release of X. Also, ATI has not released any accelerated drivers for AMD64 on Linux.

So the only way you will have accelerated grapics is with an nvidia card or using the experimental version of Xfree. The vesa driver is fine if you only do 2ds, it's not optimal but will allow you to work with Xfree.

You should check this page often for updates on the issue : http://dev.gentoo.org/~brad_mssw/amd64-tech-notes.html

2 little questions:
1. Would xfree-drm work with a Radeon 9800? On amd64 of course :)
2. Have you got any examples of what would not work when running Xfree 4.3.99? So I can get hardware rendering support?

I don't know about xfree-drm but I do know that ATI does not have any AMD64 compatible drivers for hardware acceleration, which means hardware rendering support.

ATI just released a new graphics driver for linux (as of March 10th, 2004) but from the "what's fixed in this driver" it doesn't look like it's got AMD64 support. Rumour has it that ATI will have AMD64 64bit drivers done in the summer, but no news on if that's for Windows or Linux on AMD64. I'd assume that they would release them both about the same time, but who knows with ATI. They're so bad at driver development.

As mentioned in the technotes, there is currently no solution for doing 3D acceleration using high-end ATI cards. The 32-bit drivers provided by ATI will not work on a 64-bit kernel.

The development teams' current information is that ATI will be releasing 64-bit binary drivers for high-end cards sometime "during the summer". I have also heard rumors that they may be released as early as May. But take all this with a grain of salt.

If you want 2D acceleration for ATI Radeon cards, then you can use Xfree 4.3.99 right now. However, that version (because of licensing issues with xfree.org) will likely be deprecated in the future.

The only currently supported 3D acceleration is using NVidia cards and the 64-bit binary drivers provided by NVidia ("emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx"). So if you REALLY want to play UT2004 on your amd64 linux box, either install a 32-bit distro (and the 32-bit ATI drivers) or buy an NVidia card. :-)
