I'm able to compile gnucash completely in 64-bit mode with no errors. I get this error when I launch it:
Code:

ERROR: In procedure dynamic-link:
ERROR: file: "libgw-gnc", message: "/usr/lib/libgw-gnc.a: invalid ELF header"

I do have the emul libraries emerged, and the emulation options configed in the kernel.

I've got the same problem here, but I don't think the emulation libraries would help out with something that's 64-bit. :)

I think that this is a problem with how GnuCash uses Guile (a Gnome scripting language) to start.

When GnuCash compiles it gives some warnings about dynamic linking and compiling in static mode instead. I think that this prevents Guile from loading the necessary libraries when it bootstraps GnuCash.

I don't have any idea how to fix this problem, but that's the basic issue.

I got GnuCash to work, albeit in a 32bit chroot environment. Follow the steps for installing a 32bit chroot from here, and GnuCash should install with no problems. The only thing that sucks is the duplication of tools and libs in the chroot, but if you've got a decent sized HD, it shouldn't be a problem.
