|
|
I'm trying to install Getoo on my dual UltraSparcIII Sun Blade 2500 by using LiveCD 2004.0,
but the machine hangs after showing:
Quote: | Remapping the Kernal... done. |
and I can't even do Stop+A.
I tried both "boot: gentoo" and "boot: gentoo-smp" but it made no difference.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Is there anyone who successfully installed it on SunBlade 2500? And finally, is there any boot parameter that shows more debug information? |

Sweet jesus why would you want to take Solaris off that beautiful machine? _________________ #define NULL rand() /*heh heh heh */

This is probably due to the framebuffer not being supported under linux at the moment. You can try booting it via serial console and see if that gets you any farther. |

Thank you for the information.
I'll see if I can find an RS-232C cable... |

Something else to keep in mind, if the onboard ethernet is a GigaSwift/Cassini (ce0 in solaris) it will not work. I don't believe any kernel supports this chip yet. You will need to use a pci network card with linux support, such as an Intel eepro100. |

Just thought I'd report back my experience to the forum just for record.
I couldn't find any RS-232C cable so far so no progress on that front yet.
As for the ethernet controller, I'm not familiar enough with Solaris to have it display the device information. But the device name is bge0 and looking at the motherboard it seems to use a chip from BroadCom, which I presume to be the ethernet controller.
I also tried various other distributions and most of them yields the same result --- hang up right after remapping the kernel, which seems to agree with Weevefs assesment.
And if so, even if I can install Linux via serial console, I won't be able to boot it with local keyboard/display, which is not what I want.
So I guess until the day it's supported, I'll stick with Solaris.
Thank you very much for all the help. |

Guys, is this card supported yet, because I have one and I need to get it to work, but I haven't been able to yet. |

I don't believe anything has changed on this front. You can try asking on the sparclinux mailing list as the kernel developers for SPARC lurk there and may have some more info. |
