Forgive me if this is OT or alerady in existence: but it'd be sweet to have the DE from OSX on linx. One of my friends has an ibook and the kicker has some groovy distortion effects when you move the cursor over it etc. It sonuds cheesey but it actually looks quite cool.

it does look neat. (it's called the dock in OS X). the problem is it's not configurable enough. anytime you are actively using more than 2 apps at the same time, you're reduced to clicking on them in the dock to switch between them.

I have heard of a project to make a dock-like thing in linux. I think it's called idesk or something like that, but I'm not sure.

I'm surprised that anyone would wonder why portage on OSX is a good idea unless they haven't been fortunate enough to use portage extensively or haven't been forced to use fink.

Ok, I haven't used fink (hell, I never touched MacOS really). But I heard from some Apple guys that fink does a good job. The reason I started this thread actually was that I was kinda surprised that Gentoo would go Apple.

To be honest, though, I don't really see why a metapkg aliiance is even needed. I'm almost positive that gentoo developers could have caught up with the other package systems and surpased them in no time without any help from the outside.

Cooperation is a good thing generally IMO. I know that the Gentoo devs would still kick ass alone, but I believe that we'll see even better results due to this alliance.

the nice thing about fink is that they have lots of apps ported. But fink's package management is a pain, and quite inconvenient compared to portage.

some packages can be installed with apt-get as binaries, but some have to be compiled. and when you compile, it's difficult to choose configure-time options. It really makes you appreciate USE flags.

I've been poking around and havent seen much going on. I'm wondering what I can do to help and such. The freenode #gentoo-osx is pretty much deserted. Any info would be welcome.

I got myself a powerbook around 3 months ago, and love OS X, but from my good old gentoo days I miss portage. Does anyone have any updates on this project yet?

you're not alone. I'm really looking forward to fink and gentoo's joined efforts. I guess we'll just have to wait for another GWN announcing this
