Does anyone know where the sparc install guide went?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-install.xml

I've got it up on my browser at the moment, but it's not there anymore so I haven't closed it. It's only been gone a few days, but the link from the main page has been gone for a while.

Vu.

All of the architecture specific install instructions have been removed, as far as I know. The installation handbook contains instructions for each architecture supported and should be used from now on.

Feel free to email swift@gentoo.org and complain about the messy layout of the handbook when it comes to alternate archs.

Messy? Why do I suddenly feel the urge to smack you on the head with a printed version of the handbook? :p

Well, since we're talking about "messy" doc and smacking folks....

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap3

This doc quite clearly states that I should get my sparc livecd from "releases/sparc/2004.0/livecd". This appears to be incorrect as there is no listed mirror with those files - I checked each one. Struggling through incorrect doc at step 1 of a new install makes me want to smack someone...;) Needless to say, I've not had a good first experience with gentoo...

We were having some problems with the mirrors yesterday, You should see sparc64 livecds in that directory now.

I was following the http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-install.xml file cos it was sparc specific. I remember it saying reiserfs is not recommended for Sparc architecture. is this still true?

reiserfs is kind of "use at your own risk". Some users have had good luck with it on sparc64, and others haven't. It doesn't seem to work at all on sparc/sparc32 under 2.4.x, but don't believe anyone has tried under 2.6.x

It's definitely less well tested, and there have been reports of recovery tool screwiness. ext3 + dir_index is the sane choice.

There's also the whole performance issue -- reiserfs is a CPU hog, which isn't a good thing on boxes which tend to have lots of I/O and not so much CPU...
