Just got the UT2003 live cd, successful install, except I can copy files to A: successfully. I need to copy stage1 and stage2 in /usr/share/grub/i386-pc in order to boot from a floppy.. Well it isn't copying, it's saying something like input/output error... the commands I've used to copy are
dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1
... it sometimes copies the first file, but never the second... any idea what's wrong? Yes this worked on the 1.2 install.. do I need to compile something in the kernel? |

Have you tried several different physical floppies?
Here's also a trick that I swear by, that people can feel free to laugh at as they wish: grasp the floppy with your index finger over the label on the side away from the metal opening door, and thumb on the back side underneath. Nestle the top corner of the floppy into the joint where your index finger joins your hand. Rap the edge of the floppy sharply several times against the edge of a tabletop or other sturdy, nonmagnetic surface (side of monitor is strongly discouraged).
I think that sometimes the internal platter gets "stuck" in a position where friction makes rotation inconsistent, even though there is no media error. I have resurrected several pronounced-dead floppies with this procedure. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I've tried it with different floppies (roughly 10 of them), but I'll try this technique. |

Not the software it's the hardware, my best bet is someone from my family destroyed the head of the floppy when ejecting a disk while the little green light was on... gotta go pick one up tomm, I guess... second one in 4 months... |

Never had a problem. Granted, I don't use it much these days, but the drive is about 12 yrs old. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Yea it's a very rare case... usually never happens to people at all, but I guess I'm lucky . When writing a large amount of data on a disk, or when writing to a disk and freezing in Windows, and ejecting before it's done can cause problems... |
