I tried to define the localedef for ISO-2022-JP as follows:

Code:
localedef -c -i ja_JP -f ISO-2022-JP ja_JP.ISO

and I get this:

Code:

bash-2.05b# localedef -i ja_JP -f ISO-2022-JP

This keeps going on for awhile... I thought "Well maybe it just works". Unfortunately, nothing shows up and everything crashes. I'm just lost here! gcc version info is:

I couldn't recreate your error but I also can't create the locale. I have a few questions and comments that might help.
1. use the -v on your localedef comman to get more error messages
2. specify the full path to your locales ie /usr/share/locale/<new locale>
3. What are your current LANG and LC_CTYPE settings?
4. What is the difference between ISO-2022-JP and s-jis?
5. You seem to use different commands in your code examples, any reason for this?

As I mentioned, I couldn't get that locale working. I am using UTF-8 because it is the only way I have found to enable Japanese on the console. If you solve your problem please post the solution.

Best of luck.
