Hello,

Since I do not know where to ask exactly, let's put it here. Please moderation feel free to move it where it should be, or close it if it's not to discuss in the forum.

---

Three days ago I started to translate to French the KDE's wiki page.

Almost finishing, I started to notice something bad, which I can't fix so far as I know. Please see below:

https://ibb.co/Cs7BnJV
(if you can't check that, every bit from the Gentoo's package website are not translatable from the translating page)
As you can see, I highlighted the part which should be translated, but are not.

In the code, I have this:

Code:
{{USEflag|package=kde-plasma/plasma-meta}}

Which seems to indicate this part was auto-generated from the plasma-meta package from https://packages.gentoo.org. So it's logic from here I can't translate it.

Ok.

How can I translate that and make it automatic while calling the syntax from the wiki to generate this array ?

I would like to translate 100% of each page I work on, if that is possible.

Some peoples on #gentoo-wiki suggested it might be impossible for now. And I do not have the skill to code anything to help in this potential lack of features.

Any ideas regarding this ?

Regards,
GASPARD DE RENEFORT Kévin

I don't really know about the forums, but this is a prime candidate for a discussion in the wiki talk pages  - https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Help:Talk_pages .

I believe the top and bottom lines in the screengrab that have highlights on them come from custom php code on the wiki server. In theory, some one in the wiki team might be able to translate those two lines some time, but honestly I suspect we might have a lot to deal with first, like updating php and mediawiki, doing quality control on the docs, etc...

The other lines, if I understand things correctly, get "pulled" by the wiki from packages.gentoo.org, and come from the ::gentoo ebuild repo (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Ebuild_repository#The_Gentoo_ebuild_repository). I'm not aware that strings in the ebuild repo are currently translatable, and to implement that might be quite the task...!

If I'm not wrong on all this, and from what I gather from how the project "works" , there would have to be someone who thinks this is a good idea and wants to spend (a lot of?) their time to implement it - that's where I see the real issue. I'm sure a lot of people might agree with you that this could be a nice thing to have, but any of those who have the skills to do it would still have to want to spend their time on this, in place of some other part of the project.

Currently I'm not sure how much the documentation translations are coordinated or how much coverage we have (of quality)... Maybe if we had some sort of translator community that was already on top of translating the documentation this might be more likely to attract someone willing to work on it...

There is also the maintenance burden to consider - both of code and of translations. And if someone did implement this, but we didn't keep on top of translations, I'm wondering if it might not be worse to have bad, spotty, or outdated translations than just having a few parts in English...

Sorry if this is not overly optimistic - but it's the long and short of how I understand things. If I'm wrong on any of this, please do correct me everyone  (I'm off to check if I'm not too wrong now xD).

Thanks for the French translations kgdrenefort!
