Hi

I'm trying to install gentoo on a Geekom a7 with an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS.
I've followed the handbook to do this install since I didn't used Gentoo for like 20 years.
Grub is working and the kernel start booting.
But the screen goes black quickly during boot phase and there is no HDMI signal anymore.
My guess is that something is not working with framebuffer, but I'm not sure and don't know how to solve this. I've used genkernel to compile the 6.7.6 kernel.
I'm sharing the end of my sysklogd log in cas it can help.

Any kind of help would be much more appreciated. Don't hesitate to state the obvious since I consider myself as a newbie.

Marcus613,

Welcome to Gentoo Forums ! :D

I'm a bit surprised because a kernel built with genkernel usually includes all settings. But you can check if fbdev support, framebuffer devices and framebuffer console are enabled:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/Tutorials/Manual_Configuring_Kernel_Version_6.6#Part_3_-_Must_Haves
(Your settings for AMD Graphics look good.)

If your kernel settings are all correct, I would like to ask if you have the same problem when using a dist-kernel:

I've changed very few things in my kernel config (some settings in the "Power management and ACPI options" section like "AMD Processor P-State driver" as suggested in the first link you provided). But I wasn't very surprised and I had the exact same issue after this build.
I've also installed the binary kernel, and I have the same unexpected behavior with this version.

I've used genkernel to compile the 2.7.6 kernel.
I'm sharing the end of my sysklogd log in cas it can help.

Any kind of help would be much more appreciated. Don't hesitate to state the obvious since I consider myself as a newbie.

Strange because, especially the first line:

Maybe you're missing CONFIG_FB_EFI or CONFIG_FB_VESA in your config. Better enable them both. Another possibility is you need CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB. Since you're able to provide dmesg, I assume you're ssh-ing into the system and can provide the output of lspci -nnk. If you can boot with another distro or working kernel, the output of that command would be even better.

Also it would be helpful to share your kernel config.

p.s. there's no 2.7.6 kernel. Did you mean 6.7.2?

Best Regards,
Georgi

Sorry, I meant kernel 6.7.6 installed and compiled from sources with genkernel
I also tried kernel 6.6.16 installed from binary as suggested by pietinger.
I didn't setup any sshd, I boot with my installation usbkey to get the sysklogd file.

I've also tried to add this line in /etc/default/grub (suspecting it could be an invalid refresh rate), but it didn't worked

Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=3440x1440@60"

It looks like I can't embed my config file in my message ans get an error when posting (the message is probably too long).

I've got both options:
CONFIG_FB_EFI=y
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y

but not the last one. I'll try to recompile the kernel with this one.
# CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB is not set

Marcus613,

if you have the same problem with our dist-kernel then it could be that you need a very special setting. Please check if you can boot with an UbuntuLiveCD.

If yes, please check with "lsmod" (from Ubuntu) which kernel modules are loaded.

(If not then you probably have a hardware problem).

When I enable CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB, I have the black screen even sooner (right after the ramdisk is loaded).
I wonder how it could be an hardware problem since I'm able to boot and use the consol with the Minimal Installation CD
I can try to make an UbuntuLiveCD, but I already have the lsmod from the "Minimal Installation CD" system :

When I enable CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB, I have the black screen even sooner (right after the ramdisk is loaded).

Disable CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB (because it makes problems with some chipset).

I wonder how it could be an hardware problem since I'm able to boot and use the consol with the Minimal Installation CD

IF ... If you can boot with our Gentoo-minimalCD THEN you must be able to boot with our dist-kernel ... this means to me: You have not booted the dist-kernel (do you use grub ? Have you made a grub-mkconfig afterwards ?)

To check your system I would need your (actual) kernel .config and all 3 files of: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/Overview_of_System_Information

I didn't manage to make ssh work without any screen working.

Files are too big to be embedded in the message, here are some dropboxshare

The /var/log/message (retrieved with the "Minimal Installation CD" after booting once the system)

I am confused ... you gave me the kernel .config of our LiveCD (or dist-kernel) ... here is clearly all necessary AMD GPU stuff enabled ... but you booted another kernel where you miss the AMD GPU modules:
Code:
65:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Phoenix1 [1002:15bf] (rev c1)
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Phoenix1 [1002:0124]

(there is no line "Kernel driver in use:")

Do you have a swap partition (because p2 is a root partition and p1 is a FAT ... assuming your ESP) ?
Code:
[   55.513252] EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p2): recovery complete
[   55.514077] EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p2): mounted filesystem 68e66642-a052-4e67-ad82-1888feee0dd2 r/w with ordered data mode. Quota mode: none.

I assume that you are using grub as bootmanager and that you have installed according to our AMD64 Handbook. Boot with whatever GentooCD and chroot (*) into your system. After you have mounted /efi we would need:
- ls -alR /boot (cut out all the grub files)
- ls -alR /efi
- ls -l /usr/src
- ls -l /usr/src/linux/arch/x86/boot/bz*
- output of "mount"
- output of "efibootmgr" (emerge it if you dont have it with "emerge efibootmgr")
- the content of /boot/grub/grub.cfg

The more you tell us about what you have installed and where you stand now the easier it is to help.

I didn't really understood the handbook about the boot partition location. I've found this video https://youtu.be/_50MJv4Dc40?t=3354 and followed what he does at this timestamp. So I don't have an /efi folder. Is this why I have these troubles ?

I have a swap partition and this is what my nvme drive look like:

Code:
Device              Start        End    Sectors  Size Type
/dev/nvme0n1p1       2048    4196351    4194304    2G EFI System
/dev/nvme0n1p2    4196352 3638593679 3634397328  1.7T Linux filesystem
/dev/nvme0n1p3 3638595584 3907028991  268433408  128G Linux swap

In case this could help to understand where I'm wrong, I've logged ever command I've used during the installation

Code:
`wpa_supplicant -iwlp2s0 -c /mnt/cdrom/root/network -B`

`dhcpcd wlp2s0`

`lsblk`

`fdisk /dev/nvme0n1`

- g command to create a new empty GPT partition table.
- n to add new partitions
- t to change partitions type
- w write table to disk and exit

No, you have problems because of two facts:

1. You have watched an outdated video ... please read this thread from today (and follow my link):
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1167619-highlight-.html

2. You have a kernel you should not have: vmlinuz-6.8.0-rc6-x86_64
and this kernel is the first option in your grub; so grub tries to start this kernel ...

Now, I suggest:

1. Dont change /boot in /efi ... live with this old setting ... it doesnt harm ;-)

2. Chroot again into your Gentoo system and mount your 1st parition to /boot and clean everything in /boot EXCEPT:
- EFI
- grub
- *6.6.16-gentoo* (this is our dist-kernel)
- do again a "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg"
- Check in /boot/grub/grub.cfg if now this kernel is the first option ... FROM: =>
Code:
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ###
menuentry 'Gentoo GNU/Linux' --class gentoo --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-68e66642-a052-4e67-ad82-1888feee0dd2' {
   load_video
   if [ "x$grub_platform" = xefi ]; then
      set gfxpayload=keep
   fi
   insmod gzio
   insmod part_gpt
   insmod fat
   search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 0B87-818E
   echo   'Loading Linux 6.8.0-rc6-x86_64 ...'
[...]

TO: This line should now be "Loading Linux 6.6.16"

Try to boot now this kernel.

Now I see your 2nd post ... and now I can see where you had the rc-kernel ...
Quote:
`cd /usr/src && links kernel.org`

(I assume you have downloaded the first one ... which is a ReleaseCandidate ... )

I can only recommend to use our gentoo kernels ... If you want configure manually your kernel do: "emerge gentoo-sources" and read this before:

Yes, I've tried other kernels and used to switch from one to another with the grub menu "Advanced options for Gentoo GNU/Linux"
However, I've removed every kernels except the one installed from binary files. /boot/grub/grub.cfg have been updated by grub-mkconfig like you said. But I still get the same black screen.

This is very strange. I would like to see now the (complete) /var/log/messages (from your Gentoo system; you must not chroot into; only mount p2 to /mnt/gentoo and then go into /mnt/gentoo/var/log)... please use wgetpaste for this ... (as already said in my wiki article).

Yes, I've tested stable version 6.7.6 and the 6.8-rc6
I'll try to get and merge the sources with emerge as suggested.

I managed to make the network and sshd to work.
With binary kernel 6.6.16-gentoo-dist:

emerge --info

dmesg
https://paste.gentoo.zip/QQneTrSt

lspci -nnk

I found the solution to this problem !

In /etc/default/grub I've added a line:
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"

and that's it 8)

Thank you so much for the time and dedication you've put here helping me. You really helped me to understand the problem and to learn stuff.

Happy to hear that ! :D

I have looked at the files; they must be files that were created AFTER the SUCCESSFUL boot, because there is no "nomodeset":
Code:
[    0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-6.6.16-gentoo-dist root=UUID=68e66642-a052-4e67-ad82-1888feee0dd2 ro

(I didn't find it in your grub.cfg either)

This is fine also:
Code:
65:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Phoenix1 [1002:15bf] (rev c1)
Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Phoenix1 [1002:0124]
   Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
   Kernel modules: amdgpu
