|
|
Reading through the amd64 Handbook, I now see that the recommended Mount Point, for GPT with UEFI, is /efi for /dev/sda1.
I'm curious when this came about. I don't seem to find anything in news, or the history of the Handbook.
I have an ASUS X570 mb that is a bit picky about seeing a bootable install. I have, for a few years used the --removable option for grub. It wouldn't boot when /dev/sda1 was /boot without using that --removable option.
I am wondering about changing my directory structure to the current recommendation to see if then the mb will accept grub without --removable.
That takes me back to the question of why the recommendation became /efi from /boot.
Thanks. |

The change from /boot to /efi It was in september last year; please read:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1165115.html
This has nothing to do with the -removable parameter. This does something completely different:
A normal UEFI can be told which binary it should boot (this is done when creating a UEFI boot entry using "efibootmgr -c ..."). However, some UEFI's are junky and do not accept this (yes, this is a violation of the UEFI specifications). Then there is this parameter as an emergency solution, which ensures that the normal "grubx64.efi" is renamed to "bootx64.efi" ... because this name must be accepted by every UEFI (this is a hard-coded name). _________________ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger |

Thanks, that was a good read, all of the links too. I have never delved too deeply, with understanding, into the boot process.
The motherboard I posting about has 4 different drives attached. The contents varying over time, each with its own install of something.
I did change the configuration over to the current suggestion in the amd64 Handbook for my Gentoo install.
The motherboard now even sees the Gentoo install as Gentoo when selecting the drive to boot from.
And, a special thanks to all that work to keep this going.
edit to add: When I first got this motherboard and installed Gentoo, that weird 4 partition scheme with mbr and efi was the recommended Handbook method. That may be where the original problems started. |

Yes, I can remember although it was a long time ago.
Have fun with Gentoo ! _________________ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger |
