I am installing a new gentoo system on a new disk, following the gentoo handbook. After the chroot, emerge-webrsync complains, then emerge --sync gets a traceback. Apparently, the handbook says to emerge-webrsync then emerge --sync (optional, but I alweays do it), then to set the profile, but emerge-webrsysn does not complain, and emerge --sync works, if you set the profile first. Is this a recent change? Shouldn't the handbook be updated to reflect this?

Unfortunately, I have moved on, having set the profile, I was then able to do the sync. I'm now much further into the installation, and the messages that I got from the emerge-websync and the emerge --sync are long gone. I just thought I would mention the little problem I encountered so the handbook could be corrected.

I saw the same thing this weekend, and I am not so far along with the install that I can't go back and duplicate it. When you say share the full output, is that available in a file somewhere, or do I need to capture it? I can do that in emacs shell buffer if needed...

Moriah,

It's not logged. You need to capture the output.

CaptainBlood,

GENTOO_MIRRORS is for distfiles.
rsync servers are defined in /etc/portage/repos.conf/
Not defining any rsync servers works as the default is hard coded, likewise, GENTOO_MIRRORS.
