Sound has not worked since Gentoo installation last weekend. When logging into KDE 3.0.3 I get a dialog box with the header "Informational artsmessage". The error message is "Error while initializing the sound driver device dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied) the sound server will continue, using the null output device."

I downloaded, compiled, and installed the emu10k1 driver from SourceForge. Specifically reconfigured and recompiled my 2.4.19 kernel to change all sound support to modules. Performing a modprobe command gives the following output:
-----------------------------------------------
gentoo root # modprobe emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod emu10k1 failed
gentoo root #
--------------------------------------
Any help would be appreciated for this Gentoo Linux newbie.

Mikey

Mikey, don't take this as an assured fact, as I'm a very newbie myself, but in the GentooLinux Desktop Configuration guide, it mentions changing emu 10k1 with the name for your sound card. Don't ask me what that is, as I came in here looking to find out just that.
I'll come back and let u know as soon as I find out.

John
