Got my Steam Deck last week and played around already. Tried my USB-Gentoo installation and checked out if I can fully switch to Gentoo on the device.

All is working fine except the programmable input. The Deck propagates a X-Box 360 controller, Keyboard and Mouse to udev userspace.
By default the gaming keys are mapped to the X-Box controller and the right touchpad to the Mouse. In original OS it is possible to set any key or stick to any key on the 3 devices. For Mapping "*.vdf" files are used.

Does anyone have already experience with Steam Input?
Is it possible to load '*.vdf' files on Gentoo?
Is it possible without the Steam Client?

Solved

https://github.com/kozec/sc-controller is able to configure Steamdeck keys. Unfortunately it is Python-2 only, so it's handicraft to get it working.
The ebuild games-util/sc-controller refers to another fork, that does not support StemDeck yet. See https://github.com/Ryochan7/sc-controller/issues/67
