Greetings,
I am posting in an attempt to discover the best possible solution for a service I would like to offer to the computer club of my college, that being a local mirror of the Gentoo distfiles. I know that it isn't proper to just go and download all of distfiles from a single mirror without asking first, and so I am searching for the proper protocol for beginning storage of such a large chunk of data. Also of concern is size of the pool, our current (old) hardware that would serve as the campus mirror has about 40 gigs, and I have an additional 80 on my dorm computer in case that wouldn't be enough space. (running Gentoo) Why do this? Because I'm on a rural campus which only possesses a somewhat overloaded T3 line. A local mirror would greatly assist the few users we do have, and perhaps generate some new ones my generating faster transfers over the LAN.
So, Basic Question: What's the proper way to start such a mirror? Who needs to be asked before such a large transfer? Do I even really need to ask? What software is recommended for the least footprint on mirroring?
Thank you in advance,
