IT WORKS!! I don't know who to hug, I got my computer back from the dead.

I went back to 2.6.2-love1, rebuilt lvm2, device-mapper, found something that apparently had failed to compile last time i ran "emerge -U system" that had just sat there waiting for the perfect moment to blow up.

Also thanks to GentooBox for mentioning "modules update force", seems be just what it needed.

Now I'm going to try 2.6.3 again. (It's OK, I really don't need my computer working for another 7 days anyway, then on the 22 I'm going on a LAN party that has no internet connection :( )

Well, i tracked it down to reiserfsprogs.
somehow it crashes at filesystem check, so i booted my backup kernel and unmerged reiserfsprogs.

then i booted the new love-sources, and it worked.
i reemerged reiserfsprogs, and then it still booted fine, but the crash still comes up every 3 reboot.

well, i have to live with it until a new kernel or reiserfsprogs comes out :)

the random crashes i had before was apparently only in the 2.6.3_rc2-love1 release.

This .config is close to what I had when it locked up:

Can you not post your entire .config please....
Put a link to it online or something unless you really have no choice.
Posts that long get annoying.

Anyway - just about to try the new love
I love love :)
Hehe
i just realised the humour of using love sources on valentines day :P

I installed 2.6.3_rc2-love2 and run it now. So far no problems with LVM, everything runs fine.

I whipped out an Etherexpress pro/100 card and disabled my onboard Intel gigabit. Something just isn't working right with that. The e100 driver seems to be working fine so I've compiled that into the kernel and I've disabled my firewire as well as that appeared to cause some errors on bootup. So for now I'm ok, guess I'll try reactivating everything when some more patches come out, I'm sure I'm not alone, it's probably just some interaction of various things being turned on and my config here.

Time to make sure DRI/DRM with ATI is working properly...

Nope, the crashes is still there.
I had 3 crashes the last 2 hours... that suck !

im going to use the old love-sources.

GentooBox:

I get locks as well with all the 2.6.3_rc's. I've isolated it to heavy disk i/o. It's not SATA realted because the drive in use is PATA. I hope this gets resolved in the 2.6.3 finals because its got me stumped.

Just one question Steel300, why is the generic USB scanner support removed from the kernel?

Yeah, this is weird.

I've been having stability problems with love-sources ever since maybe late 2.6.1 rc-s. X crashes randomly (that problem skipped a minor version number; I've been having it again); programs segfault often, including compiles, which is alarming.

Sometimes--and this is the strangest thing, and something I've only had with the 2.6.3 rc-s---compiles will hang. At this point, every program appears to continue running. New programs, however, fail to start, and after a little while old ones hang. Console works only for Bash builtins. If I switch to a VC and then back to X, it doesn't work and then everything freezes. This sounds like a memory-full problem, but top/gkrellm show moderate memory use. The problem is, with anything before rc3_love1, I get abysmal hdparm rates and responsiveness.

Anyone help? I'd really like to get openoffice-ximian and mozilla 1.6 compiled.

Add me to the list of people having problems. Actually, I don't know if I've ever gotten love-sources to be stable on my desktop.

The first time I tried this release, it locked during init while checking hde. The next time, everything seemed to be going fine. I got X running, started playing some MP3s on XMMS (ioniced to 20), opened some pages in Firefox, and while I was starting some torrents, it froze. I booted into 2.6.3-rc2 patched with the new CFQ and reiser4, started the same stuff, and it's still going. I only have about 3 1/2 hours of uptime, but I think vanilla with the patches I mentioned is solid.

I'll try patching -mm with the diff between what I'm running right now and vanilla 2.6.3-rc2. If it works, I can blame steel300. If it fails, I can blame Andrew Morton.

EDIT: I ran into problems with some really ugly code and couldn't get -mm to compile with my patch. I blame myself. My next kernel will be 2.6.3-rc3 with the new CFQ and reiser4.

Haven't seen the help in 2.6.3-rc series, but they were being marked as being obseleted in 2.6.2 -- supposed to use libusb instead -- part of the whole bit of moving filesystem stuff out of the kernel (udev) -- there was a script in the forums that had my scanner working for me for awhile until I switched to ~x86 at which point it didn't want to cooperate with hotplug ...

I know we all have different issues... This kernel and most loves I have tried are mostly stable. I still get oops on boot with the hotplug and ohci, but uhci is working fine now that the elev-select is out.

Yes mostly stable is relative. I would say that on this laptop I have had NO crashes at all -- just the issues with the usb oopsing as of late. I had some other minor issues with bootsplash -- but it's eyecandy so not important.

I just thought I'd try out love-sources (since I've heard so much about them and being Valentines day :P)

They work great, no problems so far, just thought I'd let you know.

How to get love-sources installed

Hmmm, steel300, for some reason I'm having ACPI problems. When I run `acpi` from the command line, everything is a-OK, but the GNOME battery charge monitor returns this error:

Can't access ACPI events in /var/run/acpid.socket!

Make sure the ACPI subsystem is working and
the acpid daemon is running.

Although if i log into GNOME as root, it works perfectly fine...What's going on? :(

If you can do it as root, and not as a normal user, then it's more than likely a permissions issue.

When love-sources will include supermount-ng?...it would be very nice...

And media-gfx/bootsplash-0.6-r6 contain bootsplash-3.1.3-2.6.3.patch.bz2...may be it should be included in love-sources instead of 3.1.3-2.6.0-test9 ?

I was unaware of a new bootsplash, thanks for pointing it out. With regards to supermount, see previous love-sources threads. I will not include it. Seeing how this is your first post, I'm not making you spring for pizza, but this is your only warning.

Has anyone gotten evms to work with this kernel? This is the first love-sources I've tried and it boots, but it won't mount any of my evms partitions at boot which are my usr, home, var, tmp and opt, so this is kind of a deal breaker for me.

I enabled all of the device mapper options I could find in the kernel config, but I didn't see any evms options, am I missing something?

Uhm, I'm still using devfs and it's mounting at boot, but for some reason none of the evms stuff seems to work. the module loads fine, but then when the partitions should mount, the startup craps out. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Shit. That was too close. Thank you for slapping some sense into over that typo.
