hello... i understand that u all r something like sick of this question
and u'll prolly sugest software raid.. but i hate that one and will use
prosmise fasttrak 133 raid device so.. situation is like that:
i boot from CD 1.4 RC1-R2 version and i cannot find my hdd
trying to do insmod ataraid - no error and then folowed byt that insmod pdcraid (i get error) it looks to me like this raid controller is not
supported in kernel provided with this boot cd version...
( controler version is 20276) so... am i rith thinking it is not supported and if it is or there is a way to work it all around so i would be able to install gentoo on hardware raid array.. tell me about it... oh.. and better dont say that i have to make small instal on my regular ata etc... i'll not do that.. the system should be able to install it self from a CD if it is not able to do that.. it is not owrth to be used and i'm not going to have any non raid disk on my desktop pc |

well... it is no less hardwre that the one u insert into PCI just becouse u dont have to pay for all production line drivers pakacke etc.. doesnt meen it is not usable.... disk array is usable from win9x as a signle disk without any special aplikations..... so its not 100% software raid... any way.. stop buging with this software raid... i need to use the one i have.. HOW DO I DO THAT ? |

Sir,
I humbly request that you make more of an effort to communicate in something that more closely approximates your native language (presumably english). While I don't mind an occasional abbrev., the recent proliferation of using "u" and other one letter phonetic abbreviations makes the resultant text very difficult to read.
Additionally, you mentioned that we were probably sick of hearing about this problem. If you suspect that we've dealt with this problem in the past, the "search" feature is probably what you are looking for, as opposed to polluting the database with more useless thread starts.
In response to your original question, I have no clue, but you might try searching google and/or here. I don't mean to be a dick, but I didn't even bother reading your second post....I actually got a headache trying to read your original.
Best Regards, _________________ StrCrssd

you need to read and learn something before you just start telling people what you want and how you want it...your being rude...i am not sure if it was your intension but re-read your original post and think about how you could better communicate to us what you are having difficulty with and say it with a little more humility.
hardware raid has its own cpu that calculates and processes the raid algortim thus releaving the stress on the system cpu...try reading it will help with understanding |

ok... so.. first my nativ language is not eanglish and not even something like english then... rommel... if i load plain old dos that
does not have a clue what raid is and how to eat it.. and it can format
raid array disk and use it.. what is doing calculations ?
next... my problem is that drivers in 1.4-RC1-R2 version dont recognise
my raid chip (whats with this smart systems ? cann't they simply use it like plain old hdd like dos does ?) that is 20276 version... as i'v read before other topics (i did search for any raid related topics here) i'v seen many ppl having diferent problems with raid... some posts with
information that pcdraid drivers supports 202(........,70) chips etc... some people having problems with groob on fasttrack 133 and other problems on same onboard raid so i started to think how did they install gentoo at all ? and what my question actualy is about that if there is any way without comppiling my own kernel with support for 20276 promise chip,
becouse i will not use any non array disks on my system, or does existing kernel support it and its stupid me, i cant find what a problem is ? |

I have this same issue... That is, I cannot insmod the pdcraid module. I get the error "init_module: No such device" A few lines from dmesg for a clue:
"ide: Skipping Promise RAID controller"
and at the very end:
"Promise Fasttrack(tm) Softwareraid driver 0.03beta: No raid array found"
Any clues? |

a lot of people seem to be having this problem - I'd suggest that there's something missing from the pdcraid driver on the cd - or something's changed somewhere along the way. I can't test it til I get home.
could some developers perhaps enlighten us as to which it is ?
if youw ant to install 1.4 - maybe boot to your 1.2 cd and use the 1.4 tarball. |

yup... 1.2 detects it.. and marks hard disks with hde hdf
but i'm not able to partiotion it as a signle disk with fdisk
there is no anything like /dev/rd/c0d0 ir ida/c0d0....
so whats a problem then ? why cant i partition it as a single solid hard disk ? |

there are lots of posts about this in the forum, one very good one is here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=7460
basically you need to load
ataraid module
pdcraid module
then you fdisk /dev/ataraid/disc0/disc |
