Ultra 5, 256M RAM 2 x 8G IDE drives
Upgraded from SuSE 7.3 as Gentoo was the only up-to date distro I could find - and it rocks....
Running 32bit userland - can you do 64? bootstrap seemed to fail with CHOST=sparc64....linux
BTW: Anybody found a decent fix to the audioctl -w play.pause=0 problem yet? |

Dual 32/64bit userland is one of those things that we'll be working on after the 2004.0 release. I have a pretty much working dual 32/64 glibc (manual, no ebuild yet) and a better gcc, but they need 2.6 headers... |

Got a few SPARC units for fooling around at home..
one Ultra-10:
- UltraSPARC IIi @440MHz, 256MB RAM
- 9GB IDE disk; 18GB (10Krpm Cheetah) SCSI disk @X6540
- Sun 21" @fb0 (Creator3D s3)
- Sun 20" @fb1 (PGX24)
== Currently running Solaris 8
one Ultra-1/170E
- UltraSPARC I @167MHz, 256MB RAM
- 2x 4.2GB (7200rpm); 1x 18GB (10Krpm) disk unipack
- Sun 21" @fb0 (ffb)
- Sun 20" @fb1 (cg6+)
== Was running SuSE 7.1; Loaded Gentoo into the 18GB disk and compiling glibc at this very moment.
Keen to find a better OS for the U10; I think it's a decent machine to do some productive work. Needs something as stable as, but faster and more fun then, the Solaris.

I've got an Ultra 80 with one processor, a gig of ram and an elite3d m6 video card running gentoo. I installed it this weekend. I started from stage 3 cause I had a paper to write on monday and I needed time to compile X and a window manager after the installation was done.
This is a really kick ass system. Thanks Gentoo guys.

If you're patient, you can probably get another CPU or three on ebay for cheap. That'd be super-sweet... |

That is so the idea. I'm just waiting for my tax return to get the second one And the next two will be affordable around the start of spring quarter. College kicks ass.
When that happens, I would be willing to donate some processor cycles to building things for gentoo development. Who should I let know about that when I have the additional procs?

irc.freenode.net, #gentoo-sparc is the best place, there's usually at least one of us awake. Currently our main build machine is a four-way netra that a user has kindly given us shell on. |

Ultra 1, 167MHz, 160MB RAM, CG6, 10Mbit Lance. 3x2.1G Seagate SCSI drives (one in CDROM bay). External 4x/8x CD-R drive and 4x 6-cd changer (Pioneer DRM-604X, with the 2048/512 byte switch ).
Added 80mm fan above CPU since the little internal fan is too stuck to turn.
The three drives are in a raid0 array mounted as root, not as much for performance as for the single contiguous 5.8G root.
Type 5C keyboard (the version with the PC-style layout, control next to alt and meta, capslock to the left of A, esc left of F1 instead of a dead key).
17" Sun monitor (with a 1" border all around the image - ???).
The CG6 totally sucks performance-wise. It's ok in a console, but X is almost a waste of disk space. Only worth it for gedit with syntax highlighting
Quite a nice box for some light C programming, and makes a real nice network server. |

... there is no way to adjust it?
Does it require a remote to adjust, perhaps? I have this random remote control for a Sun monitor, and I'm not sure what it goes to... |

Just added a sparcstation 20 to my collection, was gonna use it for stage building and testing. Unfortunately, the CPU's broken (can't do bunzip2 properly). Anyone wanna give me a couple of spares? |

Nope. The controls on the front are H and V convergence, V centering, and contrast. That's it. Nothing on the back. |

In the process of running it on an Ultra 10 with a 333MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM (upgrading ASAP), and a 20 GB IDE hard drive. New to the architecture, so I don't know if what I have is good, bad, or ugly. Started with a stage one install, and it's still compiling. Been going on for about 9 or 10 hours now.
ciaranm, I might have a sparcstation 20 here that I could donate.. Might, cause I don't yet know what I want to do with it. It's a dual 60 MHz machine though, I think 128 MB of RAM, and a 9 GB HD. Also has a CDROM drive. Give me a few days to think about it, and I'll let you know. |

That blows.
The H & V convergence were things I hadn't seen before. I got my Sun 20E20, plugged it in, and cursed for like five minutes. "WTF? THIS MONITOR SUCKS!" At least I played around with it and discovered those controls eventually... |

Sparcserver 10 with 128MB (?) of RAM and 4.3 and 9GB SCSI drives, if I can ever get it up and running. I've trying to run it headless and had all kinds of problems finding a properly wired null modem, so I have to build one. Failing that, I need to grab a keyboard off of Ebay or something so I can at least try to troubleshoot the thing. |

Hi,
I have Gentoo up and running from Stage 3 on Ultrasparc-IIi (Ultra 10 333MHz with 384 Mo of core). As for goodies, this will be a webserver and mail host, though I kicked off a Gnome2 install last night (about half-way thru now). Thank the gods (and my telco) for broadband!
Other machines: wife's Dell Laptop running XP (*spit*); my two laptops running SuSE 9.0 / KDE3.1, and the two towers running SuSE 7.0 and 9.0.
The SPARC is lovely and quick!
Cheers, nice to be on board,
Iain. |

I have an Ultra 5 at work that is also getting the Gentoo treatment. I want to run Apache, Perl, PHP and some XML/XSLT software on it, so there shouldn't be a lot to install.
Anyone here got any experience with Gentoo on Ultra 5? My Ultra 10 seems to be fine, should I expect any major differences in how I roll-out Gentoo?
I noticed that if I emerge PHP, there are quite a lot of X dependencies; anyone got any advice about how to emerge a bare-bones PHP install? What USE flags should I negate?
Thanks,
Iain. |

An Ultra 5 is just an Ultra 10 in a smaller box. Only real difference is that there's one less PCI slot and no room for a UPA card in the u5. Oh, and officially (haha) Sun don't support the faster CPUs in the u5.

From the looks of things, -X -qt might be a good start... emerge -pv gives pretty good hints usually. |
