hw/sw combo recommendations?

I have tried both gnome and kde with a couple different PCI cards. I just removed a PNY card that was producing a very blurry overall image, and lousy font rendering in both guis.

Now I'm using an old Matrox Mystique and now whenever fonts are rendered in kde it creates horizontal bands of ripple-like distortion across the entire GUI ... and font rendering still looks pretty abysmal.

If any of you have a really crisp beautiful GUI could you please let me know what card / gui you are using (and any other platform details you might find pertinent)?

(BTW I am currently limited to PCI but I am planning to reinstall on a newer system which will have an AGP slot).

I would highly recommend any nVidia solution, not because nVidia cards are known for crisp 2D display (on the contrary they are known for overall worse 2D display when in Windows). The reason I would recommend an nVidia card is because nVidia provides very good, I'd argue the best, driver support in Linux. Just an idea--I am very happy with my nVidia card for both 2D and 3D in Linux. I was also very pleased with my 3DFX Voodoo3 in 2D, so that is another option.
